My ability to putt has deserted me

Lately, it has been THE best, most stable & reliable part of my game, my last 2 rounds it has been utterly shocking and I have no idea why :D

I played at my club last Thursday, hit 11 GIR and finished with gross 94, 3 putting on 8 greens in the process.

Yesterday I played with my brother at his track, hit 12 GIR and finished with gross 89, 3 putting on 6 greens and even 4 putting on one from no more than 10ft!

In these last 2 rounds I have holed 1 decent putt, which was for an eagle on a par 5 at my brothers from about 20ft, aside from that i've been a complete mess.

I dont know why, my routine hasnt changed, the way I line the ball up hasnt changed, my swing hasnt changed and doesnt feel any different, just everything is missing and sliding by or stopping short or flying by....my touch has completely deserted me!

Why? To the great gods of golf above, I beg of you to tell me why? lol

Same thing happened to me. I think you just need to get back to thinking..."theres the hole, hit it in."

We seem to get bogged down with the technicalities some times.

Back to basics!

Thats what has worked for me.

There must be something going around as my touch has totally deserted me too. I am leaving them 4 feet short or 8 feet past and can't see the line at all. I'm trying a new grip and putting the right hand on first, thumb down the grip and then adding my left (I use to put left hand on first) and it feels a bit better. Not the answer really. I think my alignment is out too

Don't worry Keef
It'll come back from holiday just in time to see your iron game go West for a few weeks. When that returns I believe your Driver is booked into a Butlins somewhere - its run off with your short game!!

Must be summat in the yorkshire air i missed 3, 2 footers last monday we lost in the knockout, they won us by one hole up the 18th.Not been since anyone want a Scotty newport pro platinum

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, Keef, but I think I may have found your putting ability.

I played nine holes last night and averaged 1.88888888 putts per green.

Any chance I can keep it another 24 hours please as I am playing 18 tonight with some guys from work :-D

You should spend sometime at the pitch and putt ;)

It will come back fella.

This isn't the worst idea. I play a pitch and putt once a week with my 8 year old son and wife, it's great practice.

Having said that, I believe there must be a secret putter meeting somewhere because mine went walkabout this last weekend - 3 putted on at least 4 of the greens, when 2 days before I'd been drilling everything at my own track.

Was so bad on Sunday, the missus beat me by one stroke :o

TBH my putting has been woeful for a couple of months now. Little consistency - trying a secret weapon today - may report back later!

To me, putting is all confidence, not technique. Once gone, it is hard to get back, as it is a self fulfilling prophesy. I can't putt, therefore I putt badly, therefore I can't putt.

It will come back mate, but worrying about it won't help.

Stella might though.

Mine has gone aswell, I just counted the putts i had during the club championship at the weekend and for 2 rounds I had 62 putts. 32-30.On the day before I shot 74 gross with 25 putts. I missed out on 1st by 2 shots. Imagine if I'd of had 4 putts less. My putting was woeful, I held 2 putts all day. Hopefully it will come back. I like the idea of going to a pitch an putt course because my par 3 playing is rubbish. Maybe a few hours on the putting green would do no harm!

I went through this recently as well...

in the end i ended up giving up all care about putting and my feel returned. Instead of marking my ball and lining it up, i stepped up to the ball, took one second to read it and putted. It always gets close. Sometimes i think we get too caught up in the technicalities of putting.

I'm back to reading the greens properly now, but i also have my feel back so am putting well.

Good luck

hi, id been struggling for about 12 months,

watching harrington in a video i decided to give the cack handed grip a go , im now roliing in the par's and few birdies too and im playing to, or just around my h/c

bloody annoying thing is i used this grip when i first started playing and was fairly succsesful so god knows why i changed lol

I want one. someone "trousered" mine last Thursday. well hacked off.

Keef just use the blade of your sand iron until it comes back :D

I have been trying a number of Anser style putters at AG this afternoon including the Odyssey black series. Some very good putters (the black is £180 though) and I liked the TM Daytona. I actually had a clear out recently and so I've only got my Itsy Spider (not behaving) my Odyssey 554 (not working but better than the Spider) and my original Ping Anser (needs new grip and untried for ages).

Might have a look in my pro's shop tomorrow as I have £30 worth of vouchers which may soften the blow of any potential purchase.
