Yesterday saw me meet up with James at Iford golf range in Bornemouth bh77es for anyone
who lives near.
The range itself had about 20 bays open, however they do advertise they have 60?.
They also have a chipping and putting area out the front which as some of the hardest and
undulating greens I think we have both seen.
The range itself is flat and you could see to abou 160 yards where your ball was landing, after that it
was guess work.
The balls themselves were ok,however we did have a few smooth and chipped ones.
It was £6.50 for a hundred balls,but we struck a deal £20 for 400.
Bearing in mind we both live miles apart, about 180 miles, this was commitment on both our parts.
I had rang the range 2 weeks prior to tell them our plans and they were fine about that.
We arrived about 9.15 had a coffee and tea,a little chat and away we went.
The reason I wanted James to look at my swing was because I felt I was struggling
with my driving,i also didn't want a 1/2 hour lesson for a quick fix.
I have also felt lately that my swing had taken me to my limits as a golfer, and I wanted
to see if James could spot anything,or with his knowledge help improve my swing.
We also had a camera and video so we have plenty of footage.
I must admit after watching myself this morning I was embarrassed how bad my swing looked.
How I shot level par is a mystery.
My swing was a behind me takeaway with an over the top, casting downswing.
So James got me working on a different takeaway P2 as he calls it,then coming in swinging along my
feet with an open stance for a controld fade.
I must admit at first it felt weird and I was fatting a few,but as we continued the strikes got better.
Even with the alterations I can say my swing looks bad to me.
I don't complete my backswing,im so quick from the top its frightening.
But all said and done I feel as if I now know what im trying to achieve.
It will take time, and I will persevere, and myself and James will meet again in the new
year to see where im at.
After the 400 ball, james hit about 100 I was tired but certainly not crippled in any way.
We then spent an hour outside chipping and putting, this is where my strengths are at the moment
and James never gave me any pointers as such.
As I said at the start the green was mountainous and one chip shot we was trying after 80 balls we
only had 1 within gimme range.
All in all a very good session.

Was a pleasure mate...... will add a few bits to this thread for you....eg: what you were doing.... and what you SHOULD be doing.

Hopefully you will understand a lot of that already but at least you'll have a record online that you can refer to.

Did we not get any vid of you right at the beginning when you were standing SQUARE? if we did can you email it to me, all I have is stuff from after we'd already started

Let me know if you plan to meet up there again as it's my local range so I can make sure to avoid it......

This is your OTT move... from where your club is here you come over the top and swing down on the red line...

like this.....

and in terms of your swing plane/path it does this.... (swings in towards your left toes, steep and left)

With your stance more open we managed to flatten your downswing plane a little bit (to the middle pic) where the club is closer to your right forearm because you didn't have the need to swing so far left seeing as you were aiming there...

That's Justin Rose on the right... he's quite good so I heard

The more you get the plane sorted the more 'down your stance line' you will have your swing.... so it will be more like this

Ideally you will flatten that plane more and get even closer to this red arc....

Your initial set up made your OTT swing path head towards your left toes (left pic)

The new set up means your path is more parallel (right pic) so you swing more down your stance line...not across yourself... so you get more power :p

I trust you have exaggerated the line drawings to make the difference obvious.

It certainly looks considerably more (30*) than how the 'after' pics are (about 5-10*)

Btw. That's what Trackman showed me I was doing when I 'borrowed' a couple of 5i swings from the Pro who was using it at the local grass range. Slightly different with 7 and 8 perhaps as a Draw has magically appeared (AofA?). No idea what the back-swing was doing on any of them, but not overly fussed if that's the result! If it's anything like the most recent vid, I don't think I want to see it either!

Here's your 'new' P2 position (not inside like your 'old' one) but it's not good enough... needs to be wider and more up, you have a droopy club head :p

Also notice how the left arm stays outside the toe line.... (blue line)

@Foxy.... the pics are exaggerated. PJ was standing square when we started but he was open in every pic we took.... we were a bit late with the camera.

Great write up.

One thing I'm really intrigued to find out about from these mammoth sessions.......

.....who had the tea and who chose coffee?

I thought you might want to know what he could do for your dodgy swing.:D

I thought 'Hit it harder' was the solution!

Sorry is it me, why would an amateur golf want to travel so far for a golf lesson

For a single has hour session, that would probably be daft, but for 8 hours of training, maybe not.

I know someone who travelled 3.5K each way a couple of times for a 3-day clinic - with different teachers/areas of the game. It didn't result in any marked change in his handicap either! And the clinics were rather expensive on top of the travel too!

Wow what an improvement after only 8 hours
Most normal sex change doctors charge a lot and take much longer, and the results aren't anywhere as good as that
(So I'm told)
