Very sad to read, successive governments from all parties are failing the public.

About time the Police were properly funded and a review of punishments and deterrents is carried out.

What we need are more social workers and support therapists dealing with the murderers to help them re-integrate better to society and therefore set an example to others not to carry out such crimes in the future.

Or not.

Problem here is you can get a longer sentence for fraud or any money based crime than murder.
This needs to change.
When they got rid of the death sentence they said life would mean life but it dosnt anymore.

I think more bobbies on the beat would make a big difference. Everyone knows the police only drive around in cars on the way to incidents, and never patrol on foot.

It is no surprise, carrying a knife in some parts of our multi cultural society that we all benefit from is the norm. I have said for years that part of the problem to fight these kind of crimes is the " deterrent". Be that life meaning life, or Death penalty then so be it.
Also reading that only 9 % of crimes that are reported ended up in the courts is shameful. Easy peezy lemon squeezy to blame the police, but they have been hit massively by government cuts. We are now seeing the results of them cuts. Not just with the police but other departments. Not good times me finks.

Most do but a lot of " on the beat " bobbies are armed to prevent terror attacks. The days of beat bobbies are now confined to Heartbeat on the telly.

Normal police are not armed. SO17, diplomatic protection and the armed response teams (3 in the X5) are, your normal copper isnt.
The only law you see walking around are the "plastic bobbies" the Government brought in to cover up the loss of frontline police.
You need police out walking the streets and estates, showing their faces and speaking to people so everyone knows they are there and can take "info" if someone wants to help.

Go the American way, let everyone carry a gun for self defense. Because that works so well over here, that's why the US has a higher murder rate than the UK. To be honest there is no answer to reduce it, people will always commit crime and people nowadays appear to have less respect for each other than in years gone by. When I was younger the worst you feared was maybe taking a damn good kicking and needing hospital treatment. In today's society it appears that a damn good beating is the least of your worries, a knife in the stomach is what you need to watch for now.

Society world wide looks to be on a decline, the US has capital punishment and long sentences for serious crime, but it still does not stop it happening.

We reap the seeds we have sewn. If we spend more than we earn for decades then we have to either cut peoples state benefits or public services like the Police when the money dries up. When we actively increase the population over a short period of time such that public services cannot keep pace there will not be enough police, teachers etc to manage, resulting more lower educated unskilled people on the streets. You know the saying, bit like 'chickens coming home to roost'

Just think if the government had more money to spend, say (plucks a number out of thin air) £250m per week, they could have an extra
150,000 nurses, 150,000 teachers and 150,000 police on the streets.

If you do just a tiny amount of arithmetic, you will see that those numbers don't add up! And that's even simply using the salaries required! Normal 'cost' of an employee is at least twice salary!

Returning to the actual purpose of the thread....

We need more police walking the beat, all these new housing estates that are going up should have police houses so that there is a presence always on the estate, along with the police houses there should be a small Police station, with those officers that are living in the police houses, working from the police station walking the beat on the estate and surrounding areas. Community policing, letting the estate house owners know they have a police presence and letting the officers get to know the house owners.

You could kill three birds in one go by making the station multi service, a rapid response fire engine and ambulance along with the police would go a long way top making the new communities safer places to live.

I read somewhere that police numbers in England and Wales have been seriously cut.
No real surprise in the rise in crime then.

Well there's a shock! Doon posting up about England and Wales in a negative light but not doing the same for Scotland.

Police levels in Scotland at there lowest for 9 years. SNP reneging on a manifesto commitment before the last election.

Murder rate in Renfrewshire and Inverclyde higher than London and New York. Although the total is lower, due to the sheer size of the respective populations, the rate per 100,000 of population is significantly higher.

Doing away with stop and search in London was a big factor. Knife crime has risen significantly since removing it. Thanks Sadiq for campaigning for its removal (although I hear he is now campaigning for its re-instatement).

Can't help but feel the police are too stretched and are having to deal with so many minor crimes that they can't focus on the bigger ones.
