Has anybody here seen the set up for Muirfield? Just wondered what they have in store for the worlds best this year, hopefully narrow fairways and punishing rough should do it ;)

I've played the course a number of times - most recently in April at the Open media day. The links get relatively little play so the condition was as ever outstanding. The rough wasn't hideous but sure it will have grown up by July. I played it last August and it was frankly hideous (GM colleague Jezz Ellwood a 5handicapper lost 6 balls!). Unless we have biblical downpours over the next 6 weeks the course should also be playing pretty firm and fast.

4 of my work colleagues played it on Tuesday and the rough is knee high and still going, narrow fairways are pretty firm and running, bunkers as always are deep and punishing. Fairway mats are in play currently around where they expect the pros landing areas to be so course will be immaculate mid July.

Should be a great Open as always

Really looking forward to going. We always go on the Sunday. The majority of the spectators follow the leading groups, and we've found you get better viweing on the Sunday than the Thursday & Friday.

One of the problems with high rough is the wife isn't that tall. I've been tempted to take a provisional wife just in case...;)

Weather has been very kind for the last 4-5 weeks. The dry bright weather has certainly prompted growth at an alarming rate. There has been the occasional day with showers recently, but all in all it looks as if the course will play firm and fast if this weather continues.

If you're in the area to see The Open and are looking to play golf whilst in the area, most courses will be in very good condition as the recent weather has helped them get into a condition we've not seen for a few years. Everything seemed late to start this year, but it has caught up and is in great nick now.

It used to be the shortest course on the regular rota with the highest average winning total.
Don't know if that is still the case.
When I last saw it at Els Open it played the same as the members play it, just longer. The fairways did not seem to be tighter than normal.

I was thinking of going one day to watch but the prices for the tickets are an arm and a leg. By the time I fill the car up and drive down, pay for parking and then buy lunch it will be nearly £80-£100.

Still tempted thou. But I want to go play the new course at St Andrews with my dad next month for his Birthday. Sadly can't do everything.

Infact just checked the prices on the website £75 for a championship day ticket and £15 to park the car. :(

practice days are £15-£40 and £10 to park the car.

Think I will stay at home and watch it on the TV

I've been to a few Opens and I've always enjoyed the practice days as much as the competition days. Far less busy.

I don't doubt that, I can't stand the massive crowds on championship day. You spend half your day looking at the person infront's head.

Only thing i object to is £10 to park my car
