Im toying with the idea of practicing my ball striking during the upcoming winter evenings and purchasing an MP60 5 iron. 5 iron is my highest iron in the bag at present and the MP60 is the same length as my 5 iron but 3 degrees weaker and out by one degree on lie angle. My pro will happily spec to the same as my sldr 5 iron but im wondering if A it will actually help at all or just keep practicing with mine or B go the full hog and get the 3 iron which i know i will struggle to hit.
Anyone else tried the same thing and get good results?

I have a one iron which I bought for the very same reason. I thought that if I can hit that then all the other clubs would seem mega easy to hit. I think it's helped but as with everything golf nothing is easy!

I was given a bladed 6 iron to practice my ball striking when i got my first decent set from the local pro.

6 irons are plentiful as they had 5 or 6 of them for each range of irons up until recently.

well worth it if you get the same spec as what you use.

You don't just want a 5i. You need the full set to get the benefit......

Now I just so happen to have 3-pw that will be in the for sale section by next weekend ;)

Each to their own, but I've never understood this logic. Can't you practice ball striking with the irons you actually use?

This just reminded me I have an MP69 6 iron up the stairs. So just for a giggle, I got the 10 scrapiest balls out of my practice bag and nipped out to the grass beside my house to see what happened.

I stripped all 10 in a row right out of the middle and it felt gorgeous. Now I want blades!! :)

Qk so maybe ive not made it so clear. Not so much the ball striking but if i learn to hit it relatively well its the confidence it installs to hit my GI clubs even easier?

I had a set of S55's I bought dirt cheap (and just moved on for a profit) to try and improve my tempo and strike. Was an interesting idea and persevered most of the summer but it hasn't really made as big a difference as I'd hoped

Could get one of those small head clubs if you want to focus on sweetspot.

It's not a bad idea to train with less error margins than you play with, just make sure its drill based rather than swing/shot based to separate practice from play.
