Hi all

In a few weeks time I'm due to move house, the only time I've moved before was from a 1 bed flat into the house we're in now so didn't have many possessions. This time its a different story as we have house full of rubbish to move!

I'm planning on starting tonight by a clear out of DVDs/Games etc via some site called "Zapper" allegedly they do a better price that music magpie.

Then its time to see about losing some furniture e.g. a really basic old school wood + metal computer table

What I'm looking for is any inspiration on where I can get rid of some of this junk? My initial thoughts are YMCA kind of places but I'm unsure they'd even want it!

Any other tips on moving home?

Car boot sale/garage sale? Also some charities such as the British heart foundation will collect white goods/furniture for free.

If you just want shot of the stuff then your local recycle centre should take most things including electricals ect. Haven't moved for years but the last time we did we used the 6 month rule, if you haven't used/worn it for 6 months it's tip fodder.

Am in total agreement on the ruthless front chaps.

Already decided the microwave wont be making the journey, along with magazine rack and potentially a cupboard.

It's just when you unearth boxes of computer leads and other "nick naks" and I look at them and think its a shame to just bin them but at the same point what else do you do with them!?

What i did, was utilise one of the old sets of drawers the mrs wanted me to take to the tip, i think filled said drawers with "man stuff" as you describe above, thus creating "man drawers" i now have 3 sets of man drawers... oops!

Last move was 16 years ago. We did a car boot at Newbury with all the stuff we did not want to take but was too good to give away.
Up at 5am virtually sold out by 10am and did a deal with a neighbouring booter for the rest of the stuff. Made over £200 much to our surprise. Trouble was we then had to wait until 3pm before we could move the car from the pitch.

Freecycle is good for getting rid of stuff that is useful but with no real value.....tables,ladders, rugs etc.

We're moving from a two bed mid terrace to a detached four bed. HID has wanted new furniture throughout. As a result we had loads of furniture to lose. The council will dispose of items like the settees and the beds and charities are happy to come and take things like the wooden dresser and kitchen table and chairs. Just need to get rid of the small items and the crap I've accumulated

Spent last night going through the DVDs etc and musicmagpie has racked us up about £34 in unwanted DVDs...better than a poke in the eye.

Just reserved a van for 2 1/2 days too... £78 through Enterprise, not bad at all.....just need to buy a copy the sun/star and start calling everyone "me old mucker".

Tonight is time to start packing up some nicknaks....a quick trip to poundstretcher for the plastic boxes might be in order.

Another vote for Freecycle!

We moved in August of last year into our first house having been in my flat. We decided to invest in half decent furniture so my old Ikea stuff was shown the door. I didn't want to bin it as a new cover would have meant the sofas were good as new however I also didn't want to hire a van etc if I sold it.

Stuck it all on Freecycle and made sure that whoever wanted it knew they'd have to collect etc and all was gone within 2 days without any work on my side.

Forward your mail from the old address to the new for 12 months. Doesn't cost much and any subscriptions or payments etc that only happen once a year and you forget to inform will still be able to contact you.

Key things on moving house.

in no particular order as they are equally important.

Phone line working
Broadband connected
TV ready (read SKY or TV provider sorted)
Beer bought in cold or fridge is first thing plugged in
Sofa

The rest the mrs can do,

In terms of a general tip for moving, I can't recommend highly enough getting in a crew to do all the heavy lifting and moving for you. Not overly expensive if you just go for the move option (some companies even offer to pack for you), but on the day it really does take the stress out. Guys came in and had our house clear and the lorry loaded in a couple of hours. Meant I could concentrate on cleaning things up and getting everything sorted. Then when we got to our new place they put all the boxes in the rooms we wanted them to, i.e. wardrobes into bedrooms, boxes marked kitchen into kitchen etc. We were all in and unpacking by early afternoon and not stressing about getting packed up or ensuring we had a big enough van etc.

Another tip is get a takeaway the night you move and just relax for a while!

When I moved out of my flat before my wedding I thought I would take my lampshade with me.
I switched off the light and started to remove the shade when a neighbor came to the door to wish me good luck.
I walked back into the room and automatically switched on the light and re-started to take the shade off.
Next thing I knew I was lying in a corner on the other side of the room.
I came round and thought what a stupid and lucky beggar I was, didn't tell a soul.

On about the third night of my honeymoon I must have had a flashback as in the middle of the night, when sound asleep, I suddenly started twitching and jerking about. HID must have been quite worried until I told her what had happened.

OP.... be careful with electrics.
