Hi all

In my first year of club membership this year and i am loving the freedom to get out and about whenever i want.

Couple of issues at my place though, mainly the fact that the greens are some of the worst i have ever played on. Scorched all over the place and patches of grassless soil across every green, is really off putting (no pun intended). There is no bar (well there is a room with cans of beer available) and changing rooms are open for about 20 minutes a day.

Now i am far from being a snob (trust me i am FAR from being that) but i felt over dressed yesterday by wearing a polo and trousers. The course was full of walk on members in vests and shorts. I have even seen one guy wearing Rigger boots.

Does anyone have any recommendations for any alternatives?

Only criteria are a good track, a bar, changing rooms and a decent practice area. If it is playable for 12 months of the year then even better.

I don't want to spend the earth and would probably be looking at 7-800 a year max

Hi mate check out great lever and farnworth I've just joined there had a bad reputation a few years back but they're really got it together now! Price is £300 for 5 day and £500 for 7 day and lasts 12 months from when you buy it just off the motorway too, I can take you for a knock sometime if you'd like?? Other than that maybe hart common but that's pretty expensive

Would need to know where in Wigan you are based to provide proper suggestions TBH. If you can reach Bolton Old Links or Chorley Golf Club then I would 100% recommend them. Both great courses.

Hi if you would like a knock round Old links this Sunday morning 09:00 just let me know LB is coming across form Liverpool.

If you post up which clubs are within reasonable distance to you theres bound be somebody from round here who has played it and can advise.

Theres quite a few members on here round that area too so im sure you could get a round with them at these clubs as a test run if you ask nicely

You should have no trouble getting a decent club, it just might be hard to decide :D

Turton GC.

A real test and will improve your golf.

Great greens, some of the best players in Bolton play there.

Most of the BGA final players are from Turton.

The members are friendly and will make you feel welcome.

Youve got quite a few options tbh, if you can I'd take GJbikes offer of a game at bolton old links on Sunday, I'm sure you'll be impressed.
Also Bolton GC on chorley new rd is v nice, still a joining fee though. Turton is similar to BOL but not quite as good IMO definately worth a look though if its not to far to travel.
Deane is a good club but personally I'd get bored of the course if playing it every week.
If Chorley is easy to get to for you (Heath Charnock/adlington) I can take you on for a game and a look round, we've a lot of members from around the Wigan/Standish area.

Thanks all

i work in Horwich and live in Wigan, playing most of my golf with two workmates (both members of Haigh hall)

The area i am looking at would really be between the triangle formed by Wigan, Bolton and Preston. Mainly bcause during the summer months i need to be able to get there straight after work.

The ones i have considered so far are

Hart common - excellent greens and friendly feel. Pretty expensive at nearly 900 quid though
Duxbury - Cracking muni but very prone to overcrowding and flooding in the winter. Cheap option
Chorley GC - just up the road from work and looks nice (never played it personally). Looks a good option at about 750 a year
BOL - again never played it, but looks nice and is priced well
Wigan Golf club - I doubt they would let the likes of me through the door. Is probably very expensive to keep out the riff raff
Regents Valley - Not for me is in pretty poor nick with lots of building work currently
Turton - Played it last year and it is a special course. Probably a bit out the way for me and is probably mega expensive

Not really played much any further north than that so as long as i could get there in about 30 mins from the reebok stadium then i would be pretty happy.

Ok, as I mentioned before, BOL and Chorley are fantastic courses and would be top of my list. Wigan Golf Club is not as "exclusive" as it used to be, and have now dropped the 1k joining fee. Its a nice course, but there's no pro shop. It does have a moat around the clubhouse though, which is nice!! It has the added benefit of having Prince Andrew (who has played the course several times) and Dave Whelan (some love him, some hate him) as members. It also has several of my friends as members, most of whom are firemen, so the clubhouse is well protected..
Hope this helps..

The only reason I mentioned Wigan goldf club is that one of my old directors is a member and he arranged a couple of corperate days I was lucky to be invited too a few years ago.

And its also where I made my hole on one.
;)

Cant believe Hart Common is so expensive. I played it a few times and wasnt that impressed.
Duxbury is a nightmare in the winter.

Sadly Charnock Richard is going under Whelans bulldozer and Standish is no more.

These are all the courses I played when I fisrt started and before my new family break from golf;)

900 quid for Hart common? Played there last year and I wouldn't go back for free!

Bolton old links Is a good track and a great test of golf, will make you a stronger golfer playing there every week!

Wigan - Owned by Dave Whelan so would have to pay me to even play there :D

Chorley - Qwerty off here is a member so he will give you a good insight to that one.

Wigan's a nice track, didn't know they'd dropped the joining fee. Played it a few times with mates who are members and always enjoyed it.
Chorley's a decent course as well, like Shaw Hill on the other side of Chorley (obviously I'm going to say join Shaw Hill....) - both had issues with the greens a couple of years ago but both are now in great condition.
BOL is good as well, when Chorley were having problems with the greens, quite a few moved there and all seem to enjoy it.
Depending on which side of Wigan you're on, you could always look at Dean Wood (granted, it does have joining fee and it a bit more that you want to pay).

Out of the one's you've listed I'd probably side with most others and say either BOL or Chorley are you're best bets.

Thanks pal

out of sheer curiosity (and if you don't mind me asking), how much would i be looking for 12 months at Chorley?

Hi i don,t think Hart Common is £900? about £700 i think, i'm a pay and play member there £125 a year then you pay £10 or £12 each time you play weekends being more expensive suits me as i only get to play once a fortnight and don,t play much winter golf.
Course is very testing, greens reasonable and open all year, great practice facilities in 9 hole par 3 course, 3 full seperate practice holes, driving range and practice green. excellent food and bar, but only very small changing rooms. I am just off to play there now actually club champs today.
is it HAIGH HALL you refer to in your originol post?
