A tough one. Due to our landlord deciding to sell the house we have to move. Houses up for rent where we aren't too rare but good ones are. We signed for one within 3 miles of Cruden Bay yesterday, but 20 miles from Murcar. I'm happy at Murcar, and the course is a gem. Cruden, especially the front 9 is sublime apart from Cardiac Hill.

Murcar is a mile from work. Great, but my usual evening 9 holer doesn't usually kick off till after I've been home, had tea, watched the news and then wandered down for a relaxing knock.

Currently 15mins to Murcar would become 30 mins. Post move it would be 5 mins to Cruden... I haven't got a clue what to do.

Choices, Choices .....

Which of the two options do you see yourself being able to make the most of ? Both great courses, but it comes down to time really. 20miles may not sound far, but it's 30min drive at best, what about busy times of day or season, does that journey take longer ? Cruden Bay is a great course, but, if you're happy with travelling and time etc, then why go through the process of bedding in to a new club again ?

Cruden would top out at £1250 inc joining fee. But would drop to circa £675 ish in the following years. Murcar is £990 a year.

Fuel to and from would be £250(Murcar)'v' £40 for 50 rounds.

Bri, I think when all comes to all Cardiac Hill holds the answers, unless as others say, you can join both.

If you joined Cruden from Murcar, and knowing your thoughts on that climb alone, would you be seriously asking yourself at the bottom, then at the top, why on earth you did it and more so, would it make you not want to play a full 18 every comp day?

Weekday membership at Cruden for your post-work knocks maybe, if available?

Think of it as fitness training and join Cruden if you are know you will be there for a while and all the rest of it will suit. My main concern would be that the reason its cheaper is likely because its much busier with green fee players than Murcar who end up subsidising the subscriptions.

I doubt this will be very helpful because I know I'm in the minority with my opinion, but I don't think Cruden is a patch on Murcar as a golf course.

I could easily live with 30 mins e/w for that place.

I really enjoyed Cruden more than Murcar.

Bri, join Cruden just to get fit, that hill will sort you out in no time :D

As others have said, very nice conundrum to have.

Cruden is (so far) one of my top 3 most enjoyable courses played. As well as the golf, what breathtaking views, and would also give me a sense of being alive. It also has the 9 hole course, which is a beauty, so would be happy to play that, if only fancying a few holes. The view from the clubhouse is also great.

Would it be easier to have a pint after Cruden also?

Anyway, all irrelevant - which serves the best Guiness?

in the scheme of things Brian, 20 or 30 min drive is nothing up here. it takes be about that to Nairn. Never played Cruden, but Murcar was nice and i enjoyed it despite playing sheer hite.

I think from what guys i play with say, Mucar is the better course a Cruden quirkier.

i would stay put.

That's the clincher for me, half and hour drive home, tea, TV then half an hour back rather than 5 minutes.
No brainer for me unless you have pals/craic at Murcar which you don't want to give up.

How bad is this Cardiac hill ?

I have Angina and a leaky mitral valve(regurgitation). Taken carefully its manageable but I'm conscious of keeping people waiting when I have to slow down. I've used the GTN spray more in the last year than in the last 10 - old age.

Health before Golf mate, easiest course on you is what you need to play.
