I'll start by apologising for this post but, having spent the last 24 hours with people who don't play golf, I haven't had the opportunity to share this with people who understand!

Yesterday I had what was probably my worst start in competition golf since I was a nipper!

A promising par start was followed by a quad, bogey, bogey, bogey, treble leaving me with a nice +10 through 6 start. The 7th green is the next place to walk off and I've already resigned myself to a shopping trip with the missus as even that was more appealing than the dross I was playing. A solid par however kept me going with the decision made that, should I drop another two shots I was done and heading home.

12 holes later I am sat in disbelief at the +1 12 holes. Even more surprising is that, with my quad and treble being marked down to doubles I was in the clubhouse +8 for handicap. SS goes up and I get a 0.2 cut.

Absolutely delighted at the turn around yet fuming I couldn't replay 1-6. Just goes to show that you gotta stay in it.

Anyone else had an equally crazy round?

i think i did earlier in the year, had a 10 on the last, knocked down to a 7, was only 3 over before that. was just expecting to go up 0.1 after throwing another good score away. got 0.1 cut which was a surprise on the Monday when the results came though.

a friend last month had a net 75 in the club championship - the CSS rose to 73 that day - he has a 10 on one of the par 4s. He got cut! he's still complains about it now! haha

Medal Sunday and I start with a nice par.

2nd tee. Boom. Out of bounds.

Boom, and again.

Now playing 5 off the tee I slice my drive, hack it out and leak my approach into the thick stuff. We let one group through and looked for 5 minutes but no sign, as I was now staring a huge number in the face and the course was busy I decided not to put my partners through any more rubbish by going back to play another. I was fed up with that hole ruining my rounds before they began. It is still my one and only N/R.

Played the rest of the course in +3 gross and got cut.

Hate golf.

Love golf.

Many moons ago I started a medal triple(7), double(7)......then parred in to shoot 5 under handicap......
Strange game..

I had a similar cut a couple of years ago. Terrible score but a fair few stableford adjustments (think I took a 9 on a par 3) and CSS going up meant a cut.

As we discussed, my front nine yesterday with your back nine would have been more than decent yesterday!

Personally I just think it's shameful that you would consider walking off after 7 holes...

you want to be a cat1 golfer, show some resilience.

I've had a few, most recently last week when I was 7 over after 7 holes and still managed to shoot 9 over despite a treble on 11 and a double on 17. That was good enough for a 0.2 cut.

Friday just gone went out in 39 (par 35) with two 3 putt bogeys and a stupid double on a par 3. Came back in 31 (par 35) with no dropped shots. Stupid game at times.

Playing in a friendly knock a few months ago my friend (off 18) scored 27 points on the front nine and finished with 34 points

Sounds like me yesterday. Started like a train, 10 points for the first 4 holes. Was playing like a dream. Then the wheels came off - driving went to pot, lost 4 from the tee and put plenty more in the long stuff, ended up scoring 11 points for the remaining 14 holes, for a grand total of 21.

Surely I have shown resilience by playing on and turning it around.

I don't generally walk off but there are times you are playing bad enough to merit it.

i agree you have, but you said twice you were going to walk in.

Imo never a reason to walk in. There is always something to work on, you can always find a positive in a bad round

I would disagree. Your game could be so poor that, despite your best efforts, you start reacting badly. Then you are a hinderance to your playing partners. If your game needs work, walk off and go to the practice ground.

I am not saying that if you aren't playing well you should walk off, just that there is no way you can say you never should.

Not a handicap cut but when I was a member at Crowborough many years ago, I was playing in the "Survivors Bowl"..... Friday was a Stableford, with the top 8 scores going through to matchplay knockouts on the Saturday to find the eventual winner on the Sunday. I was off 12 at the time playing in the Friday Stableford and hit the turn 11 over par. Game over, or so I thought.
Can't remember exactly what I shot on the back 9 now, but it must have been close to level gross, because I got the phone call from the Secretary in the evening to say that I had qualified for the knockout stages the following day.
Unfortunately, I couldn't play as I had work the following day. And to top it all, I hadn't marked it thus on the scorecard. She was not happy.
