rather than poach rguk's thread.

I have the chance to get a set (4 - SW) of brand new (unused) MacGregor M455 steels for silly money. I've had a chance to hit a few off the 6, which went quite well - lower than my current graphites but easily as long, if not longer (it was getting dark) and, I think straighter.

Are these suitable for an aspiring high-handicapper?

There is an alternative available, Mizuno 15's (3 - SW) new and still a decent price. (Not hit these yet)

(one point to consider is that I'm in course of getting my swing fixed but these really are a good price and only the one set of steels.)

I would like to suggest waiting untill the swing is sorted but by the sound of it you dont have time on your side!

My advice would probably be the same in getting your swing sorted first. If you get something that is failry repetitive and consistent then you can fit the clubs to your swing. Otherwise you are trying to swing in order to suit the club which will exaggerate any flaws.

I would hang fire. There are lots of good deals around if you invest a little time in shopping around. By June most manufacturers will have bought out their 2008 range in full and you will find a lot of 2007 models at very good prices. In a lot of cases there will be minimal change to the club, maybe a tweak to the head design, a different shaft etc but mostly it will be cosmetic and the performance changes would be subtle.

By waiting you will get the pick of this years clubs (if money isn't too much of an issue) last years at reduced RRP, or the chance to find a bargain etiher through a friend or online.

Just my opinion

Well, blow me down, you've "crashed" a new thread in here Viscount (that's totally cool, mate) and well, I don't know how to say it....BUT.....I've just bought a set of Macgregor V-foil myself.
I tried 2 Callaway models yesterday and went a fairly long way today to try out
Taylor Made, Cleveland, Mizuno, Adams and Macgregor.

The vote was pretty close. I thought the £149 price tag was for the steel shafted V-foils, but they said they had two sets of graphite for the same deal. I tried both the flexes and the R was a disaster....all over the place....bendy like some curly wurly stick of rubber. But the graphite design YS stiff.....wow.....solid, and straight and monster.
Now, first thing to consider is that these clubs are 1/2 inch longer (4-7) than my old irons and about 3 degrees less loft....but....the Macgregor irons were out peforming mine by 1 1/2 clubs. My 5 iron (usually 165-170) was coming up shorter than the 6......distance isn't everything but I found some worn lies on the range mat and still pounded the marker board, shot after shot. The short clubs are a different steel (apparently) and despite the chunky look of these irons the leading edge of the irons sits like a classic forged iron with minimal offset...this was one of my main "must haves" for whatever I bought.
Mine are 565s......NOT a low handicaper club, but then again nor are the BB06 I tried yesterday. I don't care (especially for the price).....I am so tired of standing over a mid iron thinking "I've got to peach this one to get on the green".....not any more.....I'll take my chances with dispersion and distance issues, just to see that ball fly.
I HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT.
Obviously the price sold me a great deal but there was little to choose between any of them.

I must be doing something right!

The deal I found (wait for it) was so good I contacted my instructor for his advice, which was to go for it, it's too good to miss (this was for the V-foil M455's at dg not the pro shop).

Went back in tonight as they only had the one set of steels, tried them again in steel and graphite, and also Mizzie M15's (also a good deal).
I went for the steel as I had better control but they weren't 455's they were 565's!

So I am now the proud possessor of Rifle shafted M565's 3-PW for the grand sum of £99 ! :) :) :) :) :)

To celebrate I bought a HotBlade milled 56 to replace my old SW.

I did suggest that I should continue my lessons with the old set but he threatened to beat me over the head with them if I did.

I tried the Macgregor in my search for the holy grail and they weren't my cup of tee. They didn't suit my eye and didn't perform that great in my hands. Admittedly I only tried the steel shafts in regular flex but there was just something about them.

In the same way you know when a club is right for you, these justs weren't it.

That said good luck to both of you and I hope your purchases give you many happy rounds and many birdies (except when we play next Dave ;)). They sound a fantastic offer that really were too good to miss (and I thought I had a good deal on my R7's)

They are pretty odd clubs....hardly catwalk potential, but what sold it to me was the flight and the fact that I'd never have bought R graphite for irons....no way Jose.
Now, to let my blister go down and get cracking on the course to work out the distances.

Wait for next week Homer......kids at school, HID at work, might practice and play every day. I shredded my knuckles on the shed (finding my df 550) and now have a wicked blister 2 cm down from the base of my little finger.....must be a dodgy grip. My left hand..arghh..might have to write "property of B Hogan" on it.
Is my putter a little different from yours?
