I will be honest and say that this review may well be influenced by the fact I shot my first ever hole in one on the signature hole, the par 3 10th. But even if I had not, and also taking into account I did not play particularly well apart from one moment of genius/luck (delete as appropriate), it is a quality course.

I was a bit surprised we got on when we did, seeing as we were playing 10am Sunday morning as part of a golf break. But we got a very friendly welcome from the lady in the well stocked pro-shop and then got unlimited free practice balls to hit before we teed off, another quality touch.

The course itself was in very good condition bearing in mind the recent weather, with the greens running true and fast and bunkers in good shape (and we did get lot's of chances to test this out). It is a bit of a cross between a parkland and moorland, and when the rough is up and the heather has grown later on in the season I can imagine it is very challenging if you stray off the fairways. You need to hit is relatively straight and long to score well and it is a test, but it will not demoralise the higher handicappers as the green are quite generous.

Pick of the holes is unsurprisingly the 10th, a lovely par 3 to a green on a raised crop of rock, surrounded by deep bunkers. I also enjoyed the 5th where you have to carry a large amount of gorse and a ditch to hit a fairway running at almost 90 degrees. But there wasn't really a bad hole at all.

After the round we went in the rather nice clubhouse for a pint, some very tasty food and a chance for me to remind everyone everyone about my hole in 1. Ending a great day out.

Speaking to a few of the members, they are a bit worried about drainage after they have taken so many trees out. For those who don't know, Moortown has used pictures from the Ryder Cup played there to make the course look like it did back in the day. They have added bunkers and removed thousands of trees. Problem is, those trees used to soak up quite a bit of moisture. The course does look very good and many holes have had their aesthetics improved by these changes. The course has moved up the ranking because of this in the short term but could easily slip back if the drainage isn't improved.
