This is for the posters born in the 1940's and 50's
The old Prudential penny/tupenny policies that your parents took out may be worth a bob or two now.
Most thought of them as 'funeral' policies bought to afford a decent funeral if anything happened to the kids. Remember child mortality rates were high in those days and polio was a big fear.
Many just got thrown out as they thought there was no value to them.
The Pru are trying to track down the children [now pensioners] who now benefit.
I got a cheque this morning that will comfortably pay for a new set of top shineys.
If you think your parents took out a 'baby' policy it would be worthwhile contacting the Pru and other 'doorstep' insurance companies to check.

Cashed the ones my parents took out 45 years ago, they were still paying it, only got a few hundred back, it would have been thousands if they had put the same amount away monthly in a savings account!!!! In fact they would have a bigger return if they had put it in a shoe box monthly!!!!!

p.S any idea how the Pru are trying to track down the policy holders descendants?

When we got the letter from the Pru. my wife worked out that they had tracked us down as we took out travel insurance with them the previous year.
She was puzzled and went on the interwebby to find out info. They have thousands of these lost policies and most are worth between £40 to £50 [she paid in £48 in total] so I got a very pleasant surprise with my cheque.
