Was up watching the pro-am for the Irish open today and followed Monty around for a few holes.

Have to say, what a really nice guy he was, for the 30 mins or so that I watched him he was talking to everyone, cracking jokes, helping the amateurs with their putts etc. He even said hello and hows it going to us as he walked by.

Were no camera's or press around (that I could see) so he didn't have to put an act on.

In contrast followed a few other pros and they didn't say a word to anyone and generally gave the impression they didn't want to be there.

I know it can just be the mood they are in but Monty does get a bad rap but my only experience of him can't say a bad word about him.

Good for monty hope he picks hte right ryder cup sqaud though.

It would be extremely hard not too with the talent that is avaliable to him, we only lost the last Ryder Cup to some sublime under pressure shots from the Americans. Had this not been the case then we should have won, like we will this time around :D.

I think the trouble with Monty is there is the good side and the bad side and you're never quite sure which one will come out. When he is good he comes across as one of the nicest guys out there but when he has a black cloud over him he can com across as one of the most spoilt and arrogant members of the tour.

As it goes I like the guy and have total faith in him bringing back the Ryder Cup. After all would you fancy going into the team room on the first two days if you've thrown a match away and have to explain to him what happened!!!

I remember Monty walking through the crowd at Turnberry...I think, and kids(me then) were asking for autographs and he never even said no, just banged on past. Expressionless face. Unfortunately thats how most people see Monty, the big door faced get!

I also hope he does well in the Ryder Cup though!

Some pro's will struggle with talking to strangers, some will fourish. Just because you are good at golf doesn't make you a social wonder. I would struggle to make small talk with strangers, it isn't me. That's why I am not in sales, and work as one of those weird science type guys in the basement. Monty can work a crowd. If he is in the mood. Others can't. Not their fault really.

I don't understand where the bad press comes from either. At the Pro-Am at Wentworth last year the Pros had every reason to be relaxed, but most were just getting on with their business, not paying much attention to the crowds. A slightly larger crowd was following Monty, and on one hole, just before he was about to tee off, this young kid wandered onto the tee and asked if Monty could sign a ball for him...one of Monty's golf balls. Monty rolled his eyes at the crowds a bit, like he does, but then signed his ball and gave it to the kid. Then he turned to his caddy and said, "Err, I think I'm going to need another ball...it seems I've just given mine away!". Crowd had a bit of a chuckle. Then he had a bit of banter with his caddy before teeing off, hitting this cracker...

Came across as a thoroughly decent chap if you ask me.
