Ok, I have been having this argument for months with a couple of golfing mates:

Do you love Monty or loathe him?

I think he is just brilliant, a massive character, amusing and always interesting yet some of my mates have a serious problem with him.

Would be really interested to know what people think...

You've got to love Monty! What a great character. The only reason he gets so grumpy is because he cares so much. There's still a Major in him - you wait and see...

I think he is a great golfer, especially in team events, nee Ryder cups.

I know he has not had the best of private lives, but does that really excuse some of his on and off course tantrums?

I agree with GolfDonkey, I think his tantrums are a result of caring too much. I don't like seeing him blow up the way he sometimes does but players are only human and will show their emotions.

Gotta love Monty!

He is a real human being, imperfect like all of us, and wholly dissimilar to the faceless manufactured yanks (not a misprinted first letter) which the american college scene chruns out. And for that, I love him to bits. If only he could putt he'd have a few majors in the bag by now and he may also have had more success if he'd dumped the former Mrs Monty earlier on when she started her "I don't like you playing so much golf" malarkey and thus giving the big guy grief he scarcely deserved. If I'd been Monty in that situation I'd say "Ok, let's give up our £25m fortune and I'll go and work In Tescos for £6/hour instead"

I agree with Golfer2112 - at least the Mont has a personality unlike the Troy Chapman Jrs (made up name of course) who ply their trade on the US tour

he does sport a bad man-breast though

Always loved him, but after the US Open fiasco last year I have become a bit indifferent to him to be honest. That was his best and last chance IMO and has became a bit irrelevant in my eyes.
I'll be glad to be the first on the forum to apologize and offer my congratulations if I'm wrong however.

Always loved him, though know many who don't! However, when I look forward to seeing him play on TV, he always seems to miss the cut (don't have Sky) and even when i planned my trip to Hoylake on the Sunday last year my hope was not to watch Tiger but Monty and what does he go and do.....!!!

He talks the talk but can't walk the walk. He's an embarrasment. He had god given talent 99.9% of us golfers can only dream of so how does he try to apply that talent -by eating, eating more, not practising and not working out. He has blown several US majors down the years because of a basic lack of physical conditioning. I work a normal 40hrs per week and can still manage to keep fit - he is a full time sportsman and basically was too lazy to train. The facts Tiger was outlining last week that golfers should be athletes was spot on. Sure Monty was a good player but I think with application and determination he could have been an awful lot better. He should have had sports psychology training and got more putting training too. Alas he was taking the easy option making easy cash as a big fish in the little pond of the European Tour. His treatment of the general public is appauling, he's a snob, a cheat and a lardy waste of space. I cant believe the support he's getting here, blaming his poor former wife etc, shame on you..

Monty - yep, love him!

Don't know about his attitude though....bit dodgy....

The old brigade are getting past it now, and once it starts to slip, you can't get it back without practice like the early days.

I disagree with "alas he was taking the easy option making easy cash as a big fish in the little pond of the European Tour" - when he won the Euro Tour o_O.M 7 times in a row, he was as good as anyone, anywhere. The game has moved on since then. Blown US majors ... yeh, sure, but these were more than physical, apart from 1994.

Have to say 'hear hear' on this one. Monty's a great character to have around, but all this talk of having a major in him is a red herring now. He's had a great career and made his fortune in the sport he loves, but, like Tim Henman, his moment for individual glory has passed. Let's hope he continues to entertain us all a while longer but that he knows when it's time to quit.
(If I'm wrong, I too will happily eat my words or even chew on my hat)

Definitely agree that Monty wont win a major now. Still love him though. He's just so undpredictable. He's by far the most entertaining golfer to watch.
