....LAST after 1st round at Doral. Quest for a Masters place in tatters. Is there any way back for Monty? I can't help but feel we really are at the end of Monty's career and he will fall down the world rankings steadily over the next year or so. The man's been on tour for 20 years, I don't think his heart is in it any more. Anyone disagree?

He wouldnt be there if he didnt want nor need to be. As much as I dont fancy him to win a major, he is still a bit of a force to be reckoned with in europe with the experience and knowledge that a lot of the younger players lack.

3 over isn't that bad...but I agree with you nonetheless.

I notice that my man for a bet, S. Cink is sitting nicely at 6 under or something.

No totally agree. He has his wedding coming up and is getting heavily into course design. I can't see him putting the work in anymore to remain a top player.

I think he'll hang around the European tour for a few years but I can't see him travelling all over to play (unless they are offering him big bucks in appearance fees).

He might have one last hurrah at some low key European event (like this weeks Madeira Open) but can't see him the contention in the BMW or other quality field.

As for the majors, the Masters has gone and I can't see him even making the cut at the others (is he in the USPGA or will he have to qualify).

After this year he won't be high enough to play in the WGC events and like you say will continue to drop down the rankings (think Duval)

I don't think wel see him win another tournament.I just hope he plays well enough through the next few months with the ryder cup coming up.
He may have the experience but if the games not there what does faldo do?

Still it's a long way off yet but i'd like to see monty in the mix more.

if his game falls together on any given day the he is still a force to be reckoned with, however largely due to the reasons already expressed, this is becoming less and less likely.

I don't think we've seen the last of him, a couple of years ago we were all writing him off and then he went and got 2nd at St. Andrews in the 1985 open, he's always struggled in the States at this time of year anyway, he wont make the Masters but he will win again this year.

He's still got a beautiful swing and I don't think we should write him off just yet. However the most likely outcome if another 5 years of medicrity on the full tour before he kicks some serious butt on the seniors.

The sad thing about Monty is that if he could putt consistently well, he'd have a trophy cabinet to match Michael Schumacher.

Very true, the flatstick accounts for well over a third of all our golf shots, we really don't pay enough attention to it on the whole, maybe because it's not very glamorous but if you can't putt half decently golf will probably get the better of you, you know the scenario - great drive, great 6 iron to 20 feet.....3 putt...ARRGGHHHH. :D

He needs to get his putting in good shape first and win a major quickly if he's going to do it. Unfortunately course design is going against him.

Although he's one of the straightest he's not one of the longest and on courses where players are hitting drive 7 iron and Monty it hitting driver 4 iron he will never win.
