Morning all,
It's monthly poll time again and this time I'm looking for you to tell me which type of golf hole you most relish arriving at on the course, whether for reasons of ease, challenge, expectation levels, looks or whatever... and then the kind of ball you're most likely to buy.
As ever, thanks for your help

I chose the risk/reward short par 4.

For me, there is no reward for trying the long shot, so I can happily club down off the tee to try and leave 80 yards.

I can normally get down in 3 from there.

So the pressure is on my opponent. If they go for the big shot and pull hook it into the undergrowth it's advantage me. And if they pull off a great shot they then have to avoid 3 putting to win the hole.

So I either

win the hole ( if they bottle it )

win the moral advantage ( if they halve with a three putt )

or

get stuffed by a better player. And if the guy is that good that he's picking up birdies, I'll happily sit back and enjoy being a spectator.

Whatever happens, I win.

:)

I'd hate to mention the match at Walton Heath against Ping last year when I was playing with three 5 handicappers. 3 guys go for the green and end up in the rough. They all salvage pars.

However

One player goes - hybrid, wedge, birdie.

That game made my month. That hole made my year.

:D

3 shot par 5 for me .. true golf.. 2 good shots to get in position .. good drive . good mid-long iron. then a good wedge to set up birdie putt, sink good putt . true test of all parts of your game ,, currently using pro v 1's

I selected short par 3, but ideally, I'm talking 180+ yards forcing you to take a long iron/hybrid, over a nice big water hazard to really get the knees going.

Edit, and tour balls for me. I don't tend to buy them but ask for them at Birthday/Christmas to keep me stocked up. Currently using the WS FG Tour's that I won from GM. lost my first one last night on the last of the 9 holes I played. I then proceeded to lose the ProV1x I found last weekend when I reloaded from the tee

Long tough to reach par 4 - a real test of golf.

None of this "hit and hope" reachable par 4s or 2 shot par 5s for me or the I can afford a crap shot genuine par 5 or any kind of one shot wonder par 3.

The long tough to reach par 4 requires two consecutive good shots to get there. A proper golf hole.

As for balls, NXT Tours for me at the moment. Pro V1s etc are just too expensive and I just can't afford/justify such a ball.

I love having a lash at par 5s in two & use a ProV1X.

I love short par 3s. Simply because anyone has a chance to enjoy them with a good score. 220 yard par 3s and 600 yard par 5s are all very nice for the pros but how much chance does even a good amateur on them to be successful?

Some of the best and most renowned holes in the world are short par 3s. Troon's Postage Stamp, Augusta's 12th,Sawgrass's 17th. Pros can play them badly, amateurs can play them well.

Show-off :D

Drive and short iron par 4 for me. a good drive can set you up with a really good birdie oppurtunity. i use dt solo as i lose to many balls to be using pro vs. i use them sometimes when i find them and they really are a great ball.

I went for the reachable par 5. I am not a big hitter so any chance to it a green in 2 and putt for an eagle makes me smile (not that I ever actually reach the green in 2 but the chance is nice). I also like a short par 3, it takes distance out of the equation and just gives a pure and even test of accuracy.

As for balls, Wilson staff DX3 or FG Tour for me. Great balls at a sensible price. I can never justify spending £45 on a box of balls and I am not sure how the manufacturers justify it either so Wilson Staff balls are perfect for me and at my level I notice no difference in performance.

I prefer a drive short iron par 4when you can get close real golf and a chance for a bird, combined with a hazard thats true golf

What is the difference between a par 5 reachable in 2, and a tough long par 4?

I probably don't get a shot on the par 5, so if I get on in two, and two putt I get 3 points.
I probably get a shot on the par 4, so if I get on in two, and two putt, I get 3 points.

In both cases, a five would be on handicap.

I can't decide on the type of hole. For me, every hole starts with and is dictated by a tee shot. An easy to reach par 5 isn't easy if you drive it in the clag.

Sorry for the boring outlook :D

Fair point, the holes probably play very similar but I would rather birdie a reachable par 5 than par a long par 4

I went for the easier par 4, because I'm rubbish and it's about the only chance I get of par or birdie!! Let's me think I'm a golfer!! Currently using Nxt tour and various srixons!
