I'm on the lookout for a new club, and wanted somewhere cheap to play while I'm trying to decide. I knew Mollington had low fees, but was offered a great deal until the end of March which works out at less than a fiver a week !
I played here a few years ago so was familiar with the layout. It has a less than glowing reputation in the area as the condition can be pretty bad. I played on New Years Eve, so can't comment on the condition of the greens or fairways as the course was pretty soaked and it was all temps (tees and greens) From what I could see the greens looked average, and the fairway grass looked a bit long, but again it hard to comment fairly.
in my opinion the course has a great layout, there is plenty of water (something like 17 ponds I think), and lots of gentle elevations wich means a lot of the holes feel like they're being played through a valley. The bunkering is also well laid out.
Unfortunately, that's were the good news ends. They host a lot of weddings in the clubhouse, and I get the feeling that this is where they focus. The general condition of the course and surrounding area is scruffy. I don't now the financial situatiuon of the club, but it wouldn't cost much to fill pot holes on the cinder paths, spray the hard surfaces with weed killer etc. The winter tees were awful, either muddy and uneven, or mats that were falling apart.
The signature hole is the 17th which is an island green, and it's named after the former owner who died a few years ago so you'd expect it to be in decent condition. Unfortunately it's in keeping with the rest of the course, amateur looking landscaping, and areas that almost look like a building site. Pity as it would be a lovely hole if they sorted it out.
Walking off the 18th I felt like going into the office and screaming at someone. This could be a fantastic course with a decent team involved. There are lots of nice courses in the area, but most don't have the variety on offer here. I really hope the owners realise the potential of the course, or sell it on to someone who does.
