Eddie Molinari has been DQ'd in China because his Caddy jumped on a buggy between the 9th green and 10th tee.
Molinari was unaware of this, didn't call the 2 shot penalty as required by Rules and so was DQ'd for signing for an incorrect score.

This is such a stupid rule - I'm not saying the application of the rule is wrong, just the rule itself.
So a Caddy hitched a ride for a few yards - what is the rule trying to protect? If the player was taking a break then I can understand it, but does it really matter if a Caddy does it?
Farcical.

Totally agree. Thought the idea was to find the best/smartest golfer, not the caddie.

That's bonkers,

Golfers will shake their heads but say "rules is rules"

Non golfers will say " what a stupid rule, I'm keeping away from a game with such stupid rules"

At what point do you ignore a rule? No penalty if you breach it a little bit?

The rule is there to avoid having 120 buggies rushing round the course, each carrying a caddie.

No argument about the implementation of the rule - its there, it was breached, penalty applied.
Do you really think there are going to be that many buggies around?
Its a stupid rule and does the image of golf no favours at all.

How many buggies would you allow? Which caddies would you permit to use one and which would you force to walk?

What would the course owner have to say about a fleet of buggies all over the course on a wet day?

It is the player's responsibility to know the Rules. The is no such requirement of the caddie. The player is responsible for the actions of his caddie.

Believe it or not I know that.

But I didn't ask that.

What do you think is fairer, Molinari DQ'd or the caddy being fined?

I think everyone knows that, but in this case if the caddy does something out of sight of the player and it is not brought to the players attention, how can he address it, he's been given any opportunity has he? If its been observed to be reported, why not give the player an opportunity prior to signing his card, I bet if the player had gold & black stripes he would have :smirk:

if anyone connected with running of the competition had been aware of the rules breach before the player (any player) signed his card then they would have advised him accordingly.

unfortunately there's no scope for the application of the recent rule change in respect of activities that the player could not have known about with respect to the activities of his caddy.

Not sure if your comment is general or specific to Molinari but in this case do we know how the rules breach came to light?

So a Caddie has a major fall out with his boss midway through a round- "I know i'll hitch a lift behind his back, get the (mod Edit) disqualified hehehe, i'm so devious, ditching him anyway"

Who said that the rules are fair or unfair? They are what they are, rather like life itself.

If you don't follow the rules, the outcome is fair. Everyone is treated in the same way. That is fair.
