Over the past few years Myself and a few friends have always made a point of playing Moffat Golf clubs texas scamble day as it is a nice course and only 20 mins away from home.

This year they had changed the handicap system in use to double silloth but introduce a scratch prize as to make it an even comp,
We have had a few wins at this before but since we had a +7 handicap this year we set about going after the scratch prize, After shooting -12 we came in to find we were leading by 1 shot with only a few teams to come in.

We hang about until it was confirmed that we had one. 2 of our team were then asked to provide handicap certificates (8.30pm sat night).

We left and called back up on Sunday to say we would provide them on Monday once we had time to get into our course sec and get them printed off.

Ince we did that we drove back down to Moffat handed them in only for there Sec to then fill in our prize vouchers and hand them to us with a "there you go lads".

The points to this rant is the following

1/ Should you need to show handicaps when it was the scratch prize and if so should they not have been asked for at time of entry

2/ And finally when we got all the required documents would it not have been in keeping with the sportsmanship of the game we all love to congratulate us on a cracking score and maybe even a wee hand shake?

Really put a dampener on or whole day TBH.

Anyway if you followed all that thanks for reading. Rant over

Congrats on the win mate. :D

I can't comment as far as handicap requirements goes, but yes I think a bit of a congratulatory conversation would have been nice. The sec sounds like a bit of an ignorant old tit.

An unfortunate downfall of most, if not all, "traditional" golf clubs.

The people that run the place tend to be total twonks and the place is full of ignorant a-holes who think the course belongs to them and look down VERY condscendingly at the "younger" generation (I'm now 26).

We had a run in on Saturday. I was playing in a 4 ball, and bear in mind we're all of a decent standard and not slow (handicaps of 18, 11, 4 and 20). Teeing off the par 3 14th and as we're walking down to the green, some bloke in a foursome behind us said "Can you start walking faster between shots lads, we don't want the four ball behind us getting on our arses".

Erm..Firstly, the four ball behind them we *just* teeing off (they were nearly finished with the hole behind us) and secondly F-off mate!

He was hardly speedy himself, I saw him play 4 or 5 shots when walking between my shots and he was topping them, shanking them and struggling to get it near the green. He even drove it into a brick wall that runs parallel to one of the holes. I just don't get people sometimes. We weren't making them wait on the tee to play their shot or really holding them up in any way. The longest they had to wait was less than five minutes whilst we tidied up our putts on the aforementioned par 3.

Apologies if I've grouped anyone in with my generalisations above, but it's one of my massive pet hates about golf clubs and the "elitist" attitudes of some people.

In response to the OP.

If I've entered any competition at another club, be it an Open, Foursomes or Mixed Foursomes I always make sure I've got a current handicap cert & playing record in the bag. Surely it makes sense to go prepared in the eventuality that it might just be your day ?

As to the response of the sec on the Monday morning visit, maybe he should have been a bit more gracious, but when was the official proize giving ? saturday night ?

A rather broad brush approach to things is it not ;)

Given your distaste for the "elitist" clubs I take it you don't add to their coffers by playing on their courses ?

Did you not see my disclaimer? :D I did realise after I'd typed that it was a VERY broad generalisation, but it's been the attitude of all the "old" golf clubs that I've come across.

That said, It doesn't bother me any more (it used to when I was a proper junior, we were treated like pieces of turd on the bottom of their collective shoe!). I've learned that it's just a part of golf that one has to live with.

Hi Jamie
Maybe, as you seemed to feel, you were in with a shout of the big one, you should have had your Certs to hand. If I came to your course and won a comp I feel sure you would want evidence of handicap even for scratch prize! (We have discussed players with inactive handicaps being unable to play in comps).

It is normally the scratch prize winners who give the vote of thanks to the club, greenkeeping staff and caterers on receiving their applause from all present. The prize giving must have been subdued as the team lying 2nd, etc could not get their award on the night as they did not know their actual place until your certs were provided, two days later!!

Maybe the guy giving you your award two days late was aware of the situation you had created on comp night and was not too chuffed.

Where do you play Aztec?? I play most of my golf around the courses in Gloucestershire and will probably know the problem club(s)

I've actually not experienced it at any of the clubs down here (moved down from Lincolnshire).

I tend to play most of my golf at Orchard Golf Club (on the A40 towards Ross-On-Wye) as it's £7 for 9 holes during the week and is actually challenging. Before that I went on the 9 hole course at Brickhampton, but I've never experienced such a boring golf course in all my life!

My favourite course so far has been Woodlands in Bristol, but I'm closer to Gloucester so it's not cost effective for me to play there regularly.

If you could recommend other courses I should try (and steer clear of!) and if you want to go for a round some time, give me a shout.

Every comp i enter i have my official hp form with me as i know if i win i will have to produce it,you should have known, how can you expect anyone to give you a prize without it.

Whilst NOT implying this in any way to the present forum and please excuse my ignorance of the Silloth system id it was a normal scramble how was the club to know whether the 4 had been , dare I say it. cheating.

Additionally if they had looked on howdidido, if it was working they could have found exact handicaps.

Well played guys; a lesson leart for ther future

I've ordered handicap certificates for Pedro and I for our Volvo matchplay game at Maidenhead on Sunday. If he has one of his "good" days and we tonk them I want to be able to smugly pull out the certificates as soon as the bandit calls start. I think the club in question were poor in not asking for them up front and can only assume they were looking for a home or known winner and didn't take to "upstarts" rocking up and stealing their thunder.

Put it down to a lesson learned and make sure you have them to hand before you start next time and just enjoy the victory.

Good point. If someone is prepared to play off false handicaps then they would hardly be to bothered about shaving a couple of shots off the score. I suppose having a handicap cert does prove you are an upstanding member of somewhere though and therefore beyond reproach :D

NB Howdidido only covers clubs who use the (crap) Club Systems software. See long rant on another thread

Gloucestershire is not blessed with great golf courses but it is blessed with places to play where you can throw any old boy's club thoughts right out the window.

Stinchcombe, Cleeve Hill and Painswick will welcome everyone with open arms, Minchinhampton Old Course is the same.

They are all on common land so are pretty relaxed to dress codes and the such like. They are all decent enough courses too, although due to some restrictions placed on them they aren't able to present pristine Augusta like greens. Some of the best par 3s I've ever played are at these courses.

Even with other courses, as long as you don't go in with pre conceived ideas that someone is looking to trip you up then I'm yet to find one that you can't enjoy your round at. If Ross is your area then Ross on Wye GC is a must, it may test your "stuffy-ometer" as it is an old fashion club, but as long as you follow the rules about what you wear and keep play moving nicely it's a really friendly club.

Sorry to digress from the OP!! :o

OP, i can understand how that would have soured the day for you. They should really have asked you for certs at the start, but i'd imagine there was a bit of chatter at the end among members about your score. If it was scratch though then i don't understand why they would need handicap certs?

Played Moffat a good bit through the 90s. Quite an enjoyable track with some interesting holes. The par 3 (9th?) up the cliff face is pretty unique, and the par three on the back nine surrounding by the turfed wall is pretty cool.

18 is also a real risk/reward hole. Reading this thread has made me want to play it again!
