Modern Cinema

Ben Hur has been absolutely slated by the critics ,why make something that can only ever be worse than the original.

as for the Magnificent 7 ,it is loosely based on the original .and not as such a remake ,only in name and similar story .

It should be illegal to try and remake a cinematic classic, simple as that. I'll certainly not be rushing out to see either of them.

A whole generation has grown up without (possibly) seeing these films, and the stories remain valid. I can get why the remakes but they aren't aimed at me. I'm not their target market, it's teenagers, not 50 year olds.

I will be at the Magnificent Seven this weekend. Was my dad's favourite film, watched it with him dozens of times. I know if he were still around we would be front of the queue so will head off to see it for both of us

Was my original position when I heard they were remaking The Magnificent Seven. Then during one of our visits I was drawn in by a trailer for a Western that had no title details. Half way through I've said to Mrs BiM that we're seeing this one as I was absolutely hooked. At the end the titles come up; Justice has a number - SEVEN. Well and truly had. But I will be there this weekend.

Thinking it through, as much as I'm seeing where you're coming from DCB, and much as I've held a similar position in the past on both films and music, I'm coming round to letting them rise or fall on their own merits. I'll offer you Mark Wahlberg's remake of The Italian Job or Ann & Nancy Wilson's cover of Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven as proof that it can be successfully done.

incidentally, is not the "original" version of The Magnificent Seven a remake itself………..

I love the original western version, yes BiM you are correct, and was very hostile to this latest remake. Then, like BiM, I too saw the trailer was drawn in. I'll be going with fingers crossed that it will be different enough and yet still top notch. Here's hoping......

Im looking forward to the Magnificent Seven , have also heard good things about Ben Hur , improved action scenes because of the CGI used.

There is nothing wrong with remaking old films - if the film had a good story there is no harm in freshening it up - enjoyed remake of Italian Job

The current one is supposed to be absolute gash, but the 1959 Ben Hur was a remake of an earlier silent film as well.

Well I went and saw the new Magnificent Seven this afternoon. There's some bits added to the original, there's some bits left out & there's some subtle twists to the original plot. Will it replace the original in anyone's affections? Probably not. Was it worth watching? Hell yes; very entertaining for me and for the first time in a while i didn't check my watch during the film.

If you want to see a truly awful re-make, watch "Battle beyond the Stars" which was a space version of "The Magnificent Seven". It came out around 1980, the hero was John Boy from the Waltons, George Peppard from the A-Team was his sidekick and even Robert Vaughn played a space version of his original character. It is truly appalling.
