Hi chaps

I am looking a buying 2nd hand set of these 4-SW for £100 (in very good condition).
i'm struggling with mis-hits a fair bit and was wondering if these clubs are as good as the advertising blurb says they are, i.e. are these as forgiving and easy to hit as Mizuno say they are.
my current MD irons are excellent and look superb too, when i catch it clean with them they're perfect but i hit too many iffy shots and I was wondering if the Mizunos would help.

or am i better just spending the cash on lessons?

Think you already know what most of us are going to say. I'd get some lessons and then wait until after Christmas to buy some new irons. All the new models will be out by the time the clocks change and so you can probably pick up a decent set of Mizzy's or any other 2008 model club a lot cheaper

To be honest the MD's will do everything the MX17's will. As far as I'm concerned you don't need new irons - you may want them but I don't think you really need them.

Lets be honest here for a second. Most of us have bought clubs that we 'don't' need. In the vain attempt to improve our golf. Or is it because we like having a shiny set of new toys in the bag. Or is it that a new set gives us a phycologicial advantage. Just analyse how many sets of irons some of you have in the garage, or putters, drivers etc.

Whilst lessons are undoubtedly the way forward, don't put the poor guy off buying some new kit.

BTW the Mizzy MX19s are now discontinued, and I suspect that they'll be going cheap over the next couple of months.

I'm expecting a flaming on this!!

Um.....as RGuk heads for the nuclear fall-out shed.....
MX17s might be loved by many but they are far from top quality i.m.h.o. nasty cast things with too much offset and look tatty after about 2 games.
More forgiving than MD...possibly...a good idea for your game...no! offset like this is the work of the devil.

I'll get my coat and be back in a year or two....

Thanks for all the replies fellas.

I wasn't considering getting them just for the sake of new kit, I am more than happy with the MD's.
I just figured if they were an easier club to hit consistantly I may put the MD's into storage over winter and have a bat around with the Mizzys.

the last couple of rounds i have played have gone pretty well (for me). a fair few pars and several birdie putts (missed).
my problem is the 4 or 5 holes a round that totally wreck my score, 7's 8's and 9's!!! Would the mizzys help with this?
Lessons are probably the best option, but i'm not a lesson sorta guy if you know what i mean?
I went for a lesson when i started just to get the setup, grip, stance etc. but I'm not sure at this stage if they'd make a massive difference to my game?

No.....for sure.....100%

I've gave up playing with out and out beginners clubs years ago. A bad shot is a bad shot.......
The only advice (experience) I can offer, is that I moved from a real players club (Mizuno TP 11) to a cavity backed players club (original "Silver Scott" Tommy Armour 845). The great shots were almost as good, the poor shots were much better.....
A club like MX17 might give you a bit on the odd poor shot, but a real stinker is going to be penalised regardless.
I rarely hit a really nasty shot.....sounds immodest, but true, (on a good day I hit over 10 greens in reg) and although I've been tempted by the most forgiving Callaways etc. I always believe that in every game you'll hit some good and some bad shots......going to a "game improvement" iron will not give you such a lot...

Are the 7's, 8's and 9's down to hitting really bad shots or more to do with bad course management?
Knowing when to play safe and steering your way around the course will get rid of the bad holes irrespective of the clubs you have in your bag.....guaranteed.

Can you remind me where you play your golf?
I am a member at Altrincham GC.
it's a municipal (parkland) with a private club attached to it.
for a muni it's in good nick, par 71 and some nice holes on it. very flat and forgiving on the whole.

as for the card wreckers they come down to me normally slicing it or just not getting the ball up in the air in the first place.

I think you really need to find a local pro that can get over the golf swing in a way that suits you. When my coach moved away I tried a number of different pros including my club pro and a top quality guy from a local range. Both were good and I understood what I was doing but somehow it seemed to go after a few weeks and I couldn't recreate the feel. Now my original coach is back he has got me swinging well again and a month after my last lesson none of the bad habits have returned.

If you get a basic good swing that is repeatable then it doesn't matter what clubs you use as you will strike the ball better more often. The MD's will suit you fine until you start to improve. If you get lessons and work hard over the winter (practice makes permanent) you'l be in good shape at the start of next season. If you still want new clubs you can pick from the 2009 ranges or get a better bargain on this years models
