I am so confused by the mizuno range.

Why are there so many head types, what is the point of them all?

Is there a real difference between them all?

I can see there's a difference between a blade and a cavity back. And having hit some Cobra forged irons recently (felt amazing), I think there's a difference in feel with forged.. unless I'm kidding myself.

But the complexity of the range is baffling.

Its not as bloated as it was and I think its not as exciting as its been in the past.

MP-4 is a pure muscle back blade. All feel, no forgiveness, its down to you!
MP-5 is what they call a channel back. Its a blade but a touch and I mean a touch of help by moving some weight around.
MP-25 is a players cavity back. Still loads of feel, a touch more help than the blades but still with a squat, compact head.
MP-15 is a players cavity but has chunk of a different metal behind the sweet spot. This is a small head too and is the least Mizuno feeling MP club. It will have a more solid feel.
MP-H5 is a hollow club, short irons are forged, long irons are cast. These are a little bigger but not chunky.
JPX 850 Forged is about the same size head as the H5, stronger lofts than the MP range, a very popular GI/Players cross over.

The rest are pure GI cavity clubs of different sizes.

Mizuno`s bread and butter is irons, it always has been really, its there focus. They have a small market share but you see LOADS of them among keen players. I was shocked at the amount of people in Mizuno clothing at the British Open this year.

If you liked the feel of the Cobra just wait till you hit a forged Mizuno iron.

"Nothing feels like Mizuno"

Thank you, I'm very keen to try some, Freddielong's post is what I expected. Like the cobra, but better. However, I hate going into a shop or fitting blind, I wanted a bit more knowledge info before trying, so I know what they are telling me isn't just sales BS. Your post is much appreciated.

Thanks again. I'll let you know how I get on.

I dont know your game but I would guess as an 18 handicap you might like MP-H5 or JPX 850 Forged. However neither of them are proper MP clubs with full Mizuno feel and the MP-25 might be a touch too edgy.

Mizuno removed the MP-5X this year so historically it was MP 52, MP 53, MP 54. They are full forged with milled cavity and a head size somewhere just smaller than the JPX 800,825,850. It was a mistake in my opinion to remove this particular range.

The very large majority of my H/C is at either end of the hole. 3 off the tee or a bladed chip to disaster. Pressure basically does for my game. i tend to drop a lot of shots in very few holes, and the rest is fairly tidy. Ball striking with my irons is not at all bad, but yes, i will require some forgiveness.

I went for a fitting recently and ended up getting the 850 forged. Going from a cast club there was a huge difference in 'feel' / sound. Biggest difference for me though was distance control. Very consistent whereas I would get much bigger variances on my AP1s but more forgiveness. I'll never go back to a cast club again though...

i had a set of MP57 muscle backs. forged and absolutely gorgeous to look at ,they were a sheer delight when you middled them ,but i felt they were a little short on length for me ,dam i wish i still had them ,i really cant remember why i moved them on .

Mp57 were my first forged set, i didn't find them short at all, if anything they went further than any if had since and that includes the JPX825 pro

That's a very fair comment, I'm the same, but on the other side of the coin also go to a fitting with an open mind.

It's great to have knowledge of what each club is SUPPOSED to to, and who it's SUPPOSED to be for, but as long as you are hitting real shots into a range (ie not just relying on an indoor simulator) the results won't lie.

Best to get a fitting at a proper fitter rather than AG or similar. Mizunos are sold individually so you can mix sets, something more forgiving in the longer clubs, more of a players club in shorter. Good range of shafts available and the usual custom fit options. For a decent middle figure player a combo of MPH5 and MP15 might be nice.
