I had my first ever fitting for iron's here today, I really enjoyed the session and found the guys here very helpful and full of advice.
I had posted earlier about the trouble I was having with my irons and if you watched the sideways video you could see why, I was sending most iron shots left of my intended target or I was hitting them thin.

First he had me hit some shots on the launch monitor with my current irons Nike NDS's and he noticed that my swing was a little flat and that I was standing a little too close to the ball,so he moved me back around half an inch and had me hit some more and this little tip had me hitting the ball a lot better than I had for a long time and I was almost tempted to stick with my own clubs.

I then tried out around six different variations of shaft length, flex and lie with the Mizuno irons to find the one that best suited my awkward swing and below are the results for anyone that is interested.

My average's with the Nike 6 iron

Ball Speed 105mph
Club Speed 77mph
back spin 6850
Side spin +600 means I am drawing/pulling
Launch angle 18.5
Carry 146y

And with the recommended Mizuno MX25

Ball speed 115mph
Club speed 82mph
Back spin 5400
Side spin -100 slight fade
Launch angle 17.4
Carry 159y

He recommended that I go with
Dynalite SL R300 shafts +0.25 in longer and 2 layers of tape
1deg upright
1deg strong

Before everyone starts fighting about the benifits or shortfalls of custom fitting or that it is only for the taller or shorter player I should let you know I am 5ft8 tall, 11.5 stone and wear a medium glove so I'm more or less Mr Average.
Sure I could have bought them off the shelf but I had them custom fitted as I feel that just knowing they are made to best suit my swing may just give me more confidence and thus improve my game.
:D

Good post Toad, You've been put through the process and have seen the results, hope they help you get the most from your game this season.

We all hear so much about custom fitting and how it can improve your game, I'm sure that I'm not the only one that thinks that it's for single figure h'cappers only. Guessing from your new clubs that your probably in the high teens on h'cap, and what a difference it's made to you!
I'm convinced.
How did you persuade the wife to go for custom fitting?

Regarding Parmos question. I've shaved a shed load of my h'cap with a set of MX-19s. Preffered the Ping G5s when tested on a flightscope, but only had the budget for MX19 type outlay. Yes they're wide-soled and probably aren't suited to a hard surface type of fairway, but I've even found that I can use the 3 and 4 iron with this set. Being cast rather than forged they also require less care than the forged sets that are available, ie. MX25 / 900s. Reckon that they should do me until I get down to about 10 h'cap (seems a long way off!)

Hapless,
I am off 13 at the moment but can usually play to around 10, just not in the medals last year :(.
I picked the MX25's as they have a good solid feeling with a bit of forgivness.

On nicely struck shots, the ball just seems to jump off the club with a "softer" feel, not the clunk I get with the Nike's and some other irons that I tried and I also liked the design of them they are a lovely looking club.

I don't get hung up trying to shape shots too much but can usually draw and fade to some degree when required but prefer a straight flight and that is what these irons give me, don't get me wrong these clubs are relatively easy to shape shots with and still give plenty of feedback even though they are cavitys.
price wise they were £400 and the fitting is free at Mizuno, you don't have to be buying clubs to get fitted there just get your pro to book you an appointment.

As for the wife I borrowed madandra's Taser worked a treat. :D

Honestly wife does not care what I spend on golf as I'm very nearly tee total due to the job and don't smoke so it's my only vice.

Not as per full custon job at Mizzys place in Surrey. But I did spend a couple of hours at American Golf on their flight-scope type thing, and try different clubs etc. I don't think at the time a could hit a ball consistently enough to make much out regarding alot of the custom fit stuff. But they did go through staft length, grip size, lie angle, how clubs with more offset might help, different styles of cavity backs and blades and shaft flex / kick point. Seeing as I'm pretty average in just about every dimension going, I fitted pretty standard kit, (which of course they had in stock), sorry cynic in me. It would be interesting to see how a full custom fit would turn out, but I'm hitting the ball differently now to how I was just over a year ago, so would custom fit be a waste of money!?
If custom fit is not an option, distance, time, money, then find a sales person that you think you can trust, regardless if it's your local pro shop, Nevada Bobs or American Golf, and always go back to that person. If he's half decent he'll know what he's talking about, recognise that you love his sport as much as he does, won't rip you off because he knows where you got all your advice from, and if they have the facility and time will let you try kit even if you have real intention on buying it (yet!) and give 'free' lessons whilst trying new clubs.
I might be able to purchase (whatever) a bit cheaper online but all the above service is worth that little bit extra.
