I replaced my fairway woods today with a pair of Cleveland Classic XL's that were on the cheap in American Golf... I had a good hit with them, and also the Mizuno JPX825. I used the 3w initially.

I quickly decided after around 20 balls that the latter wasn't for me; I struggled with both launch and dispersion with it, and when I caught it 'off' it seemed to amplify the bad shot, and I switched to the Cleveland.

With the Cleveland I got good strikes, decent distance and dispersion and a mid-high flight; it was only when I came out of the fitting booth that I noticed it was a stiff shaft.

I then tried the 5w in stiff and regular; with the stiff shaft I struggled to launch the ball off the deck consistently, but with the regular I could launch it no problem.

They didn't have a regular flex 3w in stock to compare, so I was unsure about mixing flexes, but reasoned that as I generally only use the 3w off the tee as a substitute for my driver and that I'd been hitting it ok that the stiff flex wouldn't be as much of an issue with the 3w as I wouldn't be hitting it off the deck.

A past Callaway driver fitting I had suggested I was borderline between regular and stiff with that club, and the AG guy agreed and thought I wouldn't be overly compromised either way. However, I'm still niggling a doubt so I'm hoping I haven't made a mistake in taking the stiff in 3w and regular in 5w.

Reassure me GM... does anyone else have mixed stiff/regular flex in their bag?

I used to have with a set of MP32 irons.

Had a mix of R300 and S300 in the bag that worked well for a time.

Never had mixed flex woods mind you :mmm:

yup. Friend who is scratch has reg irons and stiff driver.

I played reg irons, reg driver, stiff 3w and stiff hybrid.

now its stiff irons, stiff driver, firm 4w and hybrid.

If you have a smooth transition you can play anything from reg thru stiff to x stiff, only one will prob suit consistently though.

Yes I have mixed flex shafts. S300 in my irons. Regular in my 3&5 woods and a sort of on the soft side regular in my driver.
Find that with the irons I hit about 5yrds shorter with the stiff over regular shafts but the accuracy is 100% better and to me that's what irons are about. The slightly softer driver shaft has made the difference between a straight drive and a 15yrd fade and a bit more distance.

Hope that helps to put your mind at rest?

Woods and irons all all stiff shafted, not all matching shafts in the graphite clubs though, hybrid has quite a high launching shaft, 3 wood more of a low launching one, and the Driver is a mid launching shaft, all 3 give different options to me.

In my wedges I've always preferred a more regular shaft as I never like to hit a full wedge wedge shot so I think it gives a bit more feel than a dead weight heavy stiffer shaft. I am however changing my irons to PX 6.0 which will then match the PX 5.5 shafts in my wedges!

Sooooo What do I know?!

EDIT: I'd actually suppose the 3 wood shaft would be more on the high launch side but produces low spin numbers

I have stiff in all my clubs bar my HL 3 Wood which is a reg

I play a stiff shaft Driver and regular in everything else. It is a stock stiff though and on most reviews on the fuel shafts they do say they play slightly weak to flex.

My driver, 4 wood and hybrids are regular flex. Irons are DG stiff flex. I only swing about 90mph with a driver for about 240 yards max. I'm about on the borderline for just going into stiff flex. My irons are deliberately stiff flex in order to help me keep the ball a bit lower.

Stiff in all woods and regular in irons. I go after my shots with the woods so prefer the stiff to keep a bit of control. Should really go stiff in my irons but as im unfit i struggle towards the end with heavy stiff shafted irons.

Driver is X and fairway wood is S. I personaly prefer the softer fairway wood to help move the ball left if needed. (about the only club I can turn over)
Wedges are stiff but irons are X (all be it, somewhere between X and S with a CFS shaft) but I hardly ever hit a full wedge shot, so its more on feel.

It is a mistake to think that just because all your clubs say the same flex they are all matched. That is not true even within one brand. Some regular clubs are as stiff as other brands marked stiff.

Choose the weapons that work best for the desired tasks and if their flex appears to differ, so what

I have x stiff in driver, stiff in 3 wood and soft stepped s300 in the irons. I prefer the way they feel, always likes a stouter shaft in the driver so I can commit to it without worrying about a hook.

At the end if the day, feel is everything in my book. Forget about what anyone else says, you're the guy using them

i have a mix, benross reg driver, ping stiff 5w, TM stiff hybrid, and KBS tour stiff irons. don't care about the labels, just that they work for ME.
