Ok, so today. I made a mistake and a half out on the course. There was a comp going off, that I'd decided not to play in. Played with my old man for a bit of a social instead. I hit a slightly wayward drive on the 7th, nothing too detrimental, still had a line luckily. But found the trees, saw my ball down from the tee. Walked towards my ball on the left hand side set up to what I thought was my ball, went to strike it and noticed it was a proV1 half way through my downswing. Pulled out and duffed it about 20 or 30 yards. Realising I'd made a big mistake, left my club head where I had struck the ball. Picked up the ball and placed it back in its original position. Looked up to see 2 guys walking down from the tee on the hole next to us. And turns out it was his ball, apologised sincerely, and scuppered off after making a complete tit of myself. The bloke was fine with me and told me not to worry, was a mistake and his ball had been replaced so he wasn't worried. Never clarified if he was in the comp. Due to feeling like a class a twot I wanted to get out of there asap. But my question is. Had he been in the comp, what would I of cost him? And has anyone else made a similar mistake before? I am a newbie, ish.. 8 months in. Know I should of checked the ball first, but after seeing it down was confident. So not looking for anyone to point the finger.. I know I was wrong. What would your reaction of been to this? As I expected him to be absolutely fuming.

Ball was replaced so no penalty to him

If you were in a comp then it would have been a penlaty to you

And plenty including myself have done it - its a common mistake

Playing the wrong ball happens. Don't worry and you seemed to handle it well. He wouldn't have been affected by you playing the wrong ball in a comp but had you been in it you would have been penalised for playing the wrong ball

Thank god for that, so I'm not on my own. Glad it's not just me, and that I didn't cost him anything. Hung around in the 19th to offer him a drink but he never arrived. Never felt such a tool, but posting this sure has taken a load off my mind! Cheers gents

Playing the wrong ball should never happen. There is absolutely no excuse for not identifying your ball before you hit it

Fair enough.. as I said in the OP I knew I'd made a mistake. These things happen I suppose. Even though there's no excuse for it..

ive done it in a medal,i was in the rough coming up 1 hole and another group were coming down the adjacent fairway, some how 2 balls ended up in the rough stuff, which as it was summer time i couldnt pick the ball up to make doubly sure,i was using a sirxon 2 and SO WAS OUR BLOODY CAPTAIN.guess which 1 i hit:o,got his ball onto the green then noticed the mistake, walked back to find his group still looking for his ball, they found mine about 2ft from where i played the captains ball.
yes it does make eating humble pie a bit tasteless doesnt it.:)

You're allowed to identify your ball in the rough as long as you announce your intention to your FCs and give them the chance to observe. Like I said, no excuse

The main thing is that you realised and admitted your mistake.

There's nothing worse than playing a good shot and then getting to where your ball should be and it's not there because someone has mistaken it as theirs and played on with it.

On the same subject, even if you'd leathered the guy's ball out of bounds never to be seen again, as long as you can tell him where it was, then he can place another ball at that spot and carry on without penalty.

It does happen, to all of us, I'd even hazard a guess that HawkeyeMS has done it, unforgivable though it was. ;)

Try and get into the habit of marking your ball and then checking that it's yours before EVERY shot.

Nope, never done it

PP hit the wron ball on that the last today, shame as the 2 shot pen meant he finished bang on handicap. The ball was other PPs provisonal from the previous hole that he couldnt find. Hawkeye is right, there is no reason to do it, but we get a bit lazy.

Like suggested, il put it down to experience and move on. Can safely say il never make the same mistake again, and these things happen. So if it ever happens to me, I can brush it off and crack on with my game. Unless it's an absolute monster of a drive down the middle of the fairway.. then I will insist it's never happened to me and the offender is a complete tool. ;)
