Needing to get the dining room carpeted, and not wanting to spend a fortune I visited the website of a local firm who advertise superb prices and deals "not to be missed".
Found a carpet we liked the "look" of on their website and clicked to get an estimate of how much it would cost to carpet our room. Due to the fantastic discounts and current deals they were offering, the figure came out at £175.00. "That will do for me" I thought. We'll get the guy round to do a proper estimate.
He calls round yesterday and left the following...

Fitting........£45.40
Underlay.....£74.85
Gripper.......£24.84
Deposit.......£6.19
DELIVERY....£29.00
Carpet.......£103.02

Total.......£282.30.

Where did the original £175.00 estimate come from if the carpet itself is only £103.02????
:confused::confused::confused:
And why do I have to pay for delivery??? It's not like I'm ordering a telly from them.
They are a carpet shop, literally 1 mile down the road!

I'm no maths genius, but surely the estimate was based on the carpet on it's own delivered and fitted. The extra cost is the underlay and gripper, which if you're replacing existing carpet can be reused, or as someone else has said, just buy it separately and try to fit. You don't want to really skimp on the underlay though as it is that which gives a carpet the bouncy "luxious" feel to it IMO.

Smiffy, this is just another one of those deals made to pull the wool over your eyes. They advertise a price to fit a carpet, not the underlay and the grippers. When you get the price they then add those on and tell you that you will need new underlay to go with it too. Just standard sales practices I thought to make more money from people if they are not switched on enough to see it.

Been there done that with these companies and politely advised them of somewhere they can stick the carpet.

Don't you work in car sales Smiffy, you should know all about sales tactics and how to squeeze a few more quid out of people.....................

No Difference to the car industry.
Car advert on tele shows lovely looking car.
At the end it says from £8995.car shown £13995[misleading].
Also why do tou have to pay for extra for wipe clean seats, should come as standard.
False advertising everywhere im afraid.

that was the sort of dig I was having too, seeing as Smiffy sells cars for a living. How often do you see that with car ads. They show you a car that looks really good and says you can have it from £8995. Problem is the one in the add has upgraded wheels, leather sports interior, sat nav, colour coded bodywork, premium stereo upgrade, climate control, sports suspension etc etc. It is all those extras that make it look so good and tempting, but we all know that is going to stick another £5K on the price.

Personally I find it mildly amusing that someone working in the motor trade is complaining about the way another type of retailer conducts their business....
I work in the financial sector, does that prevent me from moaning about short term loan companies, or pension transfers/endowment mis-selling ? There are sharks in all types of business, but there are also good people in most, including the motor industry.

Unfortunately, the ads have to cover the whole range of cars. If they put an ad up for the basic car, nobody would buy it as they would want more "bits and pieces" on it. If you came into my showroom and asked about a Juke, I would asks questions, what sort of thing would you want on it that type of thing. If you said you wanted built in SatNav, I would tell you about the first model in the range that came with it as standard, and also tell you exactly how much it cost, and would go from there.
But if you asked me how much the basic Juke was and I told you, and then tried to whack another few thousand on for the SAME car, I would expect you to kick off.
My complaint is that the actual carpet I enquired on was quoted at £175.00 but then rose to £285.00. Delivery???? Why should I pay for that????
If I quote you a price on a car, it will be the TOTAL price. I won't add bits on afterwards.

good point, and one I raised with the Salesman of the Mercedes dealership that I was buying a new ML 350 from as it was sitting 15 feet from us as I did the paperwork! "that's just the way it is I'm afraid, all new cars have delivery in the price". I put down the pen and respectfully said I will now think about it and I think they should also.

I don't mind a fair price but I hate being 'nickel and dimed' :(

Come on Smiffy did you expect anything other than a dig seeing as your a car salesman. But they are taking the pee out of you in that carpet shop.

Good one I came across just the last week or so. Glasgow airport charges you £1.50 to pick someone up - even if your passenger is waiting for you and you only stop for 5secs as he opens your car door and jumps in.

Drop-off is free (generous that!) and you can try to pick up from the same place - but most of the time there are 'wardens' moving you on and directing you to the 'not free' pick-up point.

That's 50p cheaper than Luton where it's £2 to drop off or pick up quickly
