Did anyone else see the clip of Mickleson playing what looks to be a 3 wood off the path at the Houston open?

I realise this thread is quite useless without the video , but I'm on my phone so not sure how to put it on

I think he was suggesting that Phil played one of those stupidly good shots that he does a lot of recently after putting himself in a lot of bad places. Playing a chip shot with a 3 wood off a path is fairly unusual, I don't read anything suggesting wrong doing.

The vid would be useful, can't find it on YouTube.

It might be me, but i dont see the difficulty? Even i have done this before, and with a fairway wood, a path is a remarkably forgiving surface to hit off. A bit like a driving range mat.

I thought a 3 wood would be a good choice for this lie? Surely he will be hitting upwards with it, rather than with an iron where he would want to hit down into the path.

Still would be a very tight lie but their strike is so good I doubt it makes a difference.

I guess it helps when a/ you are stupidly good and b/ it doesn't matter if he trashes his club. A very nice man from Callaway will simply give him another one.

I think the negativity surrounds the other week when he put a ball in a bush and claimed a free drop because his stance would have been impeded by a sprinkler head. The fact his club would not get through the bush was not taken into account. He worked the rules to his advantage. A bit naughty really but within the letter of the law.

When i was at the british masters at the grove last year. a guy hit his tee shot onto a concrete cart path. A ref said you have a free drop he looked around and asked if he could play it where it was. Yup came the reply. He promptly smashed it 200 yd plus forward to the edge of the green with sparks flying everywhere. I asked baghead (PP) why not take a drop. He pointed out that the path was an easier lie than a drop. Where the ball would of been well above his feet. It was the better of the two options available to him.
