Messi quits Rooney doesn't.

Think he did after the first 5 minutes last night!

Seriously though, I had the same chat in the office this morning with divided opinion across the guys (I think influenced depending on the club they follow)

No,
The next Manager should pick the players he believes are the best to do what he wants, to me he should pick in form players, if Rooney or any other player is good enough, why deny the next manager the choice.

Down to the player ultimately but you'd hope they have the sense to see that perhaps there are better players (both upfront and in midfield in Rooney's case) and that its time to make it easy for a new manager by stepping aside after a good international career. It won't happen and so the next manager is left to find a role and position for Rooney to play in

Messi quit in a fit of pique, he may well return.

I think Rooneys days as a striker for England are gone. I can't make out if he can make a go of this new role. Let's see how he starts the season and judge then. In answer to your question, no, but whether the new manager picks him is another issue and one we will only be able to judge when the season starts. No one should ever be an automatic pick, something England have been guilty of on far too many occassions.

You England fans love a scapegoat don't you!!?

If you're basing it on last nights performance the entire starting 11 should be jacking it in, everyone was poor.

England don't have a wealth of good players just now so why would you want one to make themselves unavailable!?

No. We're short on quality, Rooney has that. He wasn't great last night, and he's not the future, but we need to stop building for the future & just pick our best player. If he's one of them, he should play

No....in a couple of seasons Rooney will be a good sweeper, sitting in front of the back four, dictating and directing play with a stream of measured passes like a US Football quarterback, in much the same way the Gullit and Pirlo did for the Netherlands and Italy in years gone by.

Maybe.

I think he should.
As the supposed captain and a senior player he has exuded no control or authority on the pitch. Running round like a headless chicken, spraying the ball around to all parts of the pitch, giving the ball away constantly isn't what was needed.
Sadly though I think he will stay, and no doubt the next incumbent of the England managers jacket will play him regardless.
Some people have been asking about the England rugby team and how do they perform so well (under a new coach obviously) and whilst there are different words spoken, there is also the coach picking the inform players, and not just his favourites.
I cannot remember an England manager actually picking an 11 that is fully in form, and not just his favourites regardless of form. Until that happens we will never do any good, and also why should any player who isn't a favourite actually bother about England, when they know that as soon as that injury has healed in the "normally picked player" he won't get a look in.

It's not a glowing indictment of our current crop midfielders if Rooney is our number one pick there, having only played in the position a few times.

I thought Rooney played well in that role until last night. He should still be available and picked on merit

Rooney wasn't the problem - it's not his fault his manager to shoe horn him into the team played him in a deep lying role in midfield - he was just a number of players played out of position.

In my view, you retire from international duty when your country doesn't pick you any more. Anything else is just plain wrong. You should always be available when your country asks.

Rooney's been decent for country & always gives 100%,but he's had his day now.

As for Messi,he's just thrown a strop because he can't handle losing.

Only in Qualifiers and Friendlies, when it comes to European/WC Finals he goes missing, along with the rest of the England team.
