Ok, got to come clean now (be gentle!) – I find myself getting really nervous when the big matches/golf comps come around and it stuffs up my game - so infuriating.

Has anyone got any advice? You know the sort of practical advice as oppossed to the mind coach stuff that I find only gets you so far...any help v welcome!

Thanks

Warm up properly for about half an hour before so that your muscles are loose.

I remember reading an article on Tigers warm up not so long ago and the last shot he hits on the range is using the club he is going to take to the first tee. I've done this ever since and it has worked for me (most of the time !)

Used to shoot competitively.
1. Take a deep breath through your nose but . . .
let it all out Slowly through your mouth.
(Don't try and hold it, it will create tension)

This worked for shooting don't know about golf, but adapted it would be . . .
2. Get into your stance, close your eyes and let everything loosen. You should feel it through your shoulders if it's working.

Do NOT have a couple of halves, I have tried this on more than one occassion only to turn into an unfocused, club swishing 40+ handicapper.

Tempo NOT Temper

If you chuff it 4get about it.

How many times have we all N/R'd on the front nine only to look at our card on 18 and see we could have salvaged something from the round?

I would recommend drinking heavily the night before were it not for the fact that years of personal research in this area have proved that this is not a good idea.

But, seriously, mental attitude is key; if you turn up to play in a bad mood or hungover or under duress for whatever reason, you'll probably play badly. If you turn up thinking "Ok, I am here to play golf and I am ready for whatever this goddam course can throw at me !" without thinking about work/family/(insert other problems here)/etc, you're ahead of the game.

Taking a few minutes the night before to clean your clubs/sort out the bag/ make sure that tees/balls/pencils/shoes/waterproofs etc are also in order can add to that "Ok, bring it on!" feeling.

Just my $0.02, as usual.
