We have a senior at our club who constantly paces out the length of his putt then uses this as a power gauge.

For example 1 pace - 1 inch back swing, 2 paces - 2 inches and so on.

I seem to remember someone posting that this is against the rules but after searching the rules in the r&a app I'm struggling to find any mention of whether it is or isn't allowed.

Any rule guru's your help is appreciated in this .

Never heard of any rule that forbids someone pacing out the putt so will be interested to know if there is one ?

I'm sure one of the rule masters posted the number of the rule before

When I have an example as per above it was definitely a no no from memory

There was a discussion basically saying that you could walk by and measure it inside your head without breaking the rule, but I'm sure if you walked from the hole purposely pacing it out this was against the rules

I do this so would be very interested to find out if it's against rules.... Couldn't for the life of me see why it would.

It's not a perfect system I can still over hit and underhit but my pace putting has improved a lot using this method

How can you stop someone pacing out a putt - we do it all the time to determine who plays first? And how can you legislate against what someone then does in his head with that measurement?

Maybe there's an app... pace the putt, program it into the app, set the GPS, swing back and the app beeps at you when your backswing will give you 6.7 yards.
Taking into account undulations and total insanity.

Aye - there could be :) More likely to be The Golfing Brain

Just keep reading this over and over until you realise how ridiculous it is :D

But you can pace out any distance on the course so why wouldn't you be able to do it on the green ?

I'm guessing you may not be able to pace out a putt by walking along your line from ball to hole; or if you did it most putts you'd be pulled for undue delay?

The only thing I can think of is maybe someone was referring to deliberately walking on the line of putt.
But just measuring by pacing isn't a problem.

That was it! Walking alone the line to pace it was technically touching the line of putt which was a no no!

Just need to find that rule number. I'm sure when I just read the rule it was again open to judgement as the line of putt also included a reasonable distance each side of the line.

nope, nothing in the rules against this

- as long as it's done in compliance with the rules over 'touching the line of the putt' & the rule over 'allotted amount of time to taken to play a stroke"

Well the definition includes "a reasonable distance" either side of the line the ball is likely to take. Hence the issue with Aimpointers straddling the line.

Pacing isn't an issue, deliberately walking along the line is.

So with this cleared up, if a player paced their line out and then putted with the ball running over area that they had paced, would this be deemed touching the line of the putt?

In theory what's to stop a player marking his ball and walking to take the flag out and counting as he does it. He'd argue that he was merely getting the flag. There's no rule (to my knowledge) against what the guy is doing. Out of interest, how does he putt
