Talking to me dad about Belle Vue in Manchester. He was on about how busy it used to get. He then drops out he has seen Satchmo play. Eh, who. Then bogger me 5 mins later on Smooth radio the presenter says and here we are with " wonderful world " by none other than Satchmo. None other than the legendary Louis Armstrong. He said he was awesome, only matched by Ella Fitzgerald, who?
Any way I have found the date Satchmo played Belle Vue 9th March 1959, but Ella is down as playing Manchester but not Belle vue. He was proper chuffed when I found the date for him.

Any old uns on here seen any legends play. Eg Elvis.

My father was a real Jazz fan.

he had seen;

Count Bassy
Dizzy Gilespie
Miles Davis Etc.

Me i suppose the only real legends were The Velvet Underground when they reformed 90 is and did some gigs over here. wish i hadn't. i now just remember a bunch of old people.

My auntie grew up in Liverpool during the 60's. She was a regular at The Cavern Club. Apparently they had a few decent acts on 😁.

I would have loved to have seen Louis Armstrong. What a voice, what style. Your dad is a lucky man.

Bit more modern, but, saw some great sets in the late 70s and early 80s during the Fringe in Edinburgh. Stephanie Grapelli, the jazz violinist was particularly worth seeing. Used to be a really good jazz scene around that time.

Belle Vue was an amazing venue. I saw Deep Purple and Status Quo there in the same week in 1974. For a long time it was Manchester's main venue before the Apollo, the Free Trade Hall and latterly the Arena.

My Dad who was an opera fan saw Gigli play the Kings Hall in Belfast in what I guess must have been the 1930s?

He was the Pavarotti of his generation back then.

Also here were no fancy PAs yet the Da told me he could be heard perfectly well.

That was a helluva big voice.

The site I have found showed deep purple playing the 15th May 1974, but the Quo are only down as playing May 1975, the site must be a bit iffy as me old man is adamant he saw Ella at Belle Vue, but she is down as playing at the Free trade hall.

Back to Belle Vue and slightly off topic, me mum said she took us four kids there once. I got lost and she found me walking under Nellie the elephant. Honest, she said the guy in charge of the elephant nearly had a heart attack.

Same here, me mam and dad both seen the Beatles play in the cavern a few times.

My dad told me he saw the Who playing in a pub somewhere before they were famous. I've seen them too - when they were famous.... and old!

Thanks for that! Your Dad!

So did I, are you trying to make me feel old ?

Also saw Roy Orbison, Bo Diddley, the Stones (including Brian Jones) and nearly all of the other 60's groups but missed out on The Beatles.

Setlist.fm has Purple playing Kings Hall, Belle Vue on May 15 1974 and Quo on May 12 1974.
Funnily enough I googled Ella Fitzgerald Belle Vue and all I got was a link to this thread! But she did play the Free Trade Hall in January 1959. I saw some good bands there too, including Hawkwind December 10 1973 (no need to google, it was my first ever gig and the date is fixed in my mind), Wishbone Ash, Thin Lizzy, Peter Frampton, Bachman Turner Overdrive...
For some reason, while the crowd were waiting for the act to come on, they used to shout "Wally!" I heard several stories as to why, but I was never sure of the real reason.

My Dad's best mate (sadly no longer with us) swore the Beatles came to his house after playing in Oldham in February 1963. He said they needed to hold up somewhere to escape their over enthusiastic fans. TBH, I thought Feb 1963 was a bit early for Beatlemania, but accounts of the evening say the music was drowned out by screaming girls. You never know, he might have been serious all along.

My dad was a semi-professional pianist and was very much into his jazz. Among others he saw Oscar Peterson, Count Basie, Stephane Grappelli and numerous big bands but he always said the greatest performance he ever saw was from Louis Armstrong.

My dad used to play drums in various jazz bands and has also seen Oscar Petersen, Basie, Lousi Armstrong, Frank Sinatra and so on.
His idol, however, was Buddy Rich and he took me and my brother to see Buddy Rich play at the Ronnie Scott's Club in London.
I don't think I'll ever see a better drummer ................... google him, exceptional.
