McLaren golf

Now hyping up the reverse colourway on the Tour bag.

The tour bag that is not available for sale in the original colourway… nor the “reverse” colourway.

Strange marketing. Also no Instagram posts on their page for 6 days now.

I saw Shiels' review and he seemed to think the irons were very, very good. That was the series 3 slightly more forgiving iron, not the series 1 that Rose would be using.

Some people on here seem to be questioning the commercial rationale for golf, and can't see how this will make a profit. McLaren is owned by a middle eastern sovereign wealth fund, so I'm sure they have experience spending money with no expectation of a return.

That last bit reminds of something. 🤣

The Economics Students among you would be familiar with the term "Veblen" or, "GOO" as dear old Mrs Palmer put it. "Goods of Ostentation."

Here we have a good example. Posh brand, F1 Team, very expensive golf bags and clubs. The higher the price, the higher the perceived value (to some) and that sector buys it.

Demand increases with price, the opposite of the basic laws of economics.

Two identical golf shirts made in the same far East factory.... one has a wee logo on it and sells for 5 times the price of the other one. I best most of us on here have such a shirt in their wardrobe. (I can also guess who hasn't.🤣🤣)

Maclaren irons? No thanks, I'll stick to Ping. Ooh, hang on, are those Wilson, for half the price, just as good?

Who cares? It's your cash, spend it as you will.

The way how formula 1 teams bend all the rules in car racing, I'd expect that they will attempt this with the golf clubs.

I heard somewhere one of the questions, do the shafts need to be round?

This is the type of new thinking they will bring.

If you've seen the clubs, you will not that there is absolutely nothing revolutionary, extreme, or in fact special about them. As someone pointed out earlier in the thread, these are simply Objects of Ostentation. True innovation in most fields doesn't come from marketing initiatives but through curiosity, genius en team effort, to overcome actual obstacles through internal motivation - only later being monetized by other people entirely. So, although innovation becomes monetized, it comes about regardless of funds or profit motive.

I've got some clubs with oval shafts and some where part of the shaft is hexagonal.
