Looks like a big draw is lost to the US. I can understand he wants to further his career and move up the rankings, but it's a shame he feels it can't be done playing on the European tour.

Short article here

Hi,
He would be mad not to join he played 11/12 events this year on the PGA tour and he has said there are no events in europe that he fancies between the end of the gulf swing in Feb and may so he may just play in america in march april and before the majors then be back in europe for most of the summer.
Mike

He also mentioned that he will be splitting his time like Harrington, I have no problem with that, makes the American golf all the more watchable as I work during the day when the euro tour is playing and never get to see it.

Yeah what a suprise!!! 12 months ago he said he wouldn't go there full time for a couple of years yet as he wanted to learn his trade here!
I guess it's the lure of the big bucks??

Am i the only one that thinks he's overhyped???

Sure the kid can play and has a fantastic ability.....just not for four consecutive rounds, he seems to play his best golf when the pressures off, three average rounds, then when he's out of contention he'll shoot a course record 61-62.

All the media hype suggesting he'll be better than TW....i doubt that very much!

No but then imo you are compareing him to the best ever, I don't think he will be that good, but I think in his prime he will be the best golfer in the world and will win majors.

And he is still not going there full time. He says he just wants to play a bit more over there while still being part of the european tour.

He is an incredible talent and if i was him the main reason i would play over there would be to get away from the press in this country. You only have to look at Andy Murray as an example of that. The press just put far to much pressure on British talents.

If he thinks his game will progress faster over there then good luck to him.

He is an undoubted talent, but i dont think he will become world No1. A few right good players in that age group worldwide just now and i dont think he is the pick of the bunch.

I don't think you can blame him. He's not going full time and retaining his European Tour status too so is sorted to qualify for the RC. I'm not sure but don't think he played any collegiate golf so US course set ups will still be new to him week in, week out. I see it as a positive as he'll get more exposure, learn to play different courses and be more ready to the majors out there.

I think combining the two can be done, but needs careful planning which is where his family and management team have a big role to play. If they can get a large number of events under his belt but March/April while the European tour does some globe trotting then it'll make fitting the rest in much easier in the later part of the season. I think it'll be easy to play events like the majors (which count) Irish, French German Opens, the BMA and PGA events and that is almost enough to secure the tour card already.

I'm still not convinced he's the finished article and think playing regularly against the US big boys will advance his learning curve and scare the whatsit out of them in time for the RC

I think he needs to go and play out there more . Hopefully the bigger, quicker greens will improve his putting, which on the face of it, is the weakest part of his game by a country mile.

Totally agree, and skys comentators may have impeccable golf credentials but they could put an insomniacs convention to sleep (the blessed Di excluded, of course).

Shame, but it was always going to happen. Let's hope he splits his time between both tours. With regard to his talent, he is going to be right up there in my opinion, unless he succumbs to women and ale like us lot on the forum !! ;) ;)

I think Rory is the biggest talent in world golf he is only 20 yrs of age he will be world number 1

I am not sure if he will be world number 1 as long as mr woods is on the scene!

However he is the biggest up and comming talent in world, what he has achieved in such a short space of time is amazing and IMO the way he plays the sky is the limit in europe or the states!

I agree that while Tiger is still playing the gap is too big for McIlroy to become number one. I don't think he or any other golfer of this generation will be as successful as Woods in terms of tour wins and particularly majors. Records are there to be broken and a new golfer will come along in twenty or thirty years like Woods and Nicklaus before him and dominate the sport and a generation. It won't be McIlroy but I do see him winning a major or two and picking up wins globally.

Hi,
When rory hits his peak in 10 year tiger will be 44 so he will have a good chance of becoming world no. 1, and i do think that if tiger passes the 18 majors mark he will not be as competive as he is now it will be job done i'm not that bothered any more, I think rory will win in the range of 6 majors but it will depend on him winning one before he hits 25/26 if he dosen't he could be the next garica as the pressure mounts to win one every year and he never acheives his full potential.
Mike

It is quite conceivable that he could be the No.1 in any one year but so long as the format for calculating who is No.1 remains the same, it will take at least a year for Woods to be displaced.
Hence we had the situation where Woods was No.1 even though he wasn't playing
