Hello.

On the first day of the Wells Fargo tournament McIlroy hit a second shot into the crowd.
He re-took it but only had a one shop penalty. I think be took had taken his second but tv showed him re-taking the shot as his third.
I have read the rules but I cannot see why a 2 shot penalty didn't apply?
Can you explain please?
Thanks.

I didn't see it and am not clear about your description but wouldn't it be simply 'stroke and distance'?

Thanks very much.
Does stroke and distance result in a penalty shot?
Sorry I have just started following the golf so I am not sure of the terms.

Yes. You lose the distance of your original shot in having to go back to where you played from and get a penalty stroke as well.

Think of it this way

You hit your drive off the tee, 1 shot played
When you find your ball you hit it back to the tee, 2 shots played
Then you hit another drive of the tee, 3 shots played.

The OP said that it was Rory's second shot that was the subject of the penalty. If stroke and distance was involved, it would be his 4th shot, not his 3rd as the OP said.

The OP said a second shot, presumably that was the stroke in S&D ie his third after the penalty
