The European Tour have given Rory an opportunity to qualify for the Final Series by playing 12 only tournies rather than meeting the 13-event Race to Dubai qualification standard.

Thoughts ?

Not unusual for medical exemptions to be offered. I guess Rory's football injury gave the tour the opportunity to do it for him. Not sure what his commitments were for the European Tour events prior to him getting injured - maybe he'd committed to the reqd amount anyway but missed out because there wasn't enough slide in his tackle

He Missed the Scottish Open, Open and the Bridgestone, he needed one more which he'd have got. Bottom line is, he's leading the R2D and is a massive draw, i dont see anything wrong with it.

No problems with it - plenty get medical exemptions and it's only one event he will miss out by

ET would have been crazy not to allow him to compete

Shame that the Tour/Event is smaller than the player but since it is its the right call to get him to play

McIlroy isn't the first golfer on any tour to be given medical exemptions - don't think it's right yo suggest this makes McIlroy bigger than the tour

Agree.
Medical exemptions are common and they've only reduced his requirement by 1 tournament. I bet they would do the same for any golfer. It's only newsworthy because it's Mcilroy.
They'd look a bit silly if they excluded the RTD leader on a technicality after he spent a chunk of timeout injured.

Agree gents. The European Tour needs all the help it can get re sponsors/coverage etc and having Rory compete is a no brainer.

Good to see he is keeping up his end of the bargain to play an additional 3 events to make up for those missed.

I'm just hoping that he uses the extra events to sharpen his game. Nothing better than watching the best play at their best.

I was surprised he took last week off.
I think as soon as his ankle is up to it he needs as much play as possible to get sharp again.
Guess he is still recuperating to some extent

The right decision - despite playing minimal events he is leading the RTD, would make a mockery of the system if the number 1 guy can't play the finale. The same in the PGA tour and his fed-ex ranking prior to missing last weeks first event - he was ranked 3rd despite playing considerably less than JS, JD, BW etc.

Dont see why they wouldnt. As has been highlighted, he missed at least 3 events that would have allowed him to qualify. I dont buy into this its Rory so they need him malarchy. Its a straight medical exemption. Would anybody be querying it if it was the guy ranked 80th in the R2D?

I remember readings somewhere that he said he can't play too many tournaments in a row with his ankle.

I don't think he's playing any extra events that he would normally have passed. He missed the 2 Chinese events last year but that was to do with his impending court dealings.
