Yesterday's competition was a medal with maximum score of 5 over par in operation.

Due to the high wind and rain a significant number of players walked in at various stages of their rounds (quite a few after 9 holes) and simply entered NR for holes not completed.

Reading the rules, 21.2b states that holes with either a higher score than the maximum or no score at all should be set to the maximum score.

My question is, does this apply to a player who walked in after 9?
My reading of the rule is that it should and their remaining 9 holes where NR was entered should be adjusted to show maximum score of 5 over par on each hole.

If I'm being over zealous, at what point would you suggest NR'd holes at the end of a round should be corrected to maximum, with 3 or 4 holes remaining perhaps?

Your learned thoughts would be welcome!

The first question you should be asking is whether these "scores" are acceptable. Not liking the weather conditions is not, as far as a I remember, a valid reason for not playing a hole.

WHS rules differentiate between holes not completed (ie started but not finished) and holes not played (ie not started at all). You have to have an acceptable reason for the latter for your score to count for handicap purposes. Weather, apart for lightning, isn't acceptable

Thanks for your reply.
I'm not sure what you mean by "acceptable scores".

Are you saying that if the hole isn't started then it shouldn't be counted on the card in any form?

And if so, how should the card score be recorded? Maybe as withdrawn, or DQ, or what?

Holes not started should be recorded as NS not NR, which is reserved for pick-up holes (i.e. started but not completed). This distinction is necessary for handicapping.

Those abandoning their rounds are disqualified from the competition (rule 5.7), and the handicap committee will need to deal with any such scores.

May thanks, that's short and sweet and will make things much simpler!

“Acceptable” in WHS terms means a score that has been made in a round that meets the requirements specified in the WHS Rules.

I’m slightly embarrassed as a former handicap adviser not to be definite about it but memory ain’t what it used be. My recollection is that the handicap committee would have to judge on whether a return with holes not started on it could have these hole scored up because the player had a valid reason such as an injury. Heading for an early beer because of the weather is not a valid reason.

A return with fewer than ten holes played would not be acceptable.

Correct me if I’ve misremembered or out of date.
