I have just booked a day at Sunningdale in August and on the form it states:

Please note: Sunningdale recommends handicaps do not exceed 18 and all golfers should demonstrate a satisfactory level of competence or may be asked to return to the Clubhouse.

Just posting to say I agree with this as a rule of thumb. A shot a hole is enough for anyone and a limit of 18 would stop winning scores of 45+ points - a good thing in my view - and I suspect would also focus the minds of players with higher handicaps and encourage them to improve to a moderate standard of play.

I appreciate that this might cause some consternation with those who do have handicaps higher than this and I don't mean to offend. I just think that Sunningdale have got this absolutely spot on.

I don't have a problem with it if the course has such a high degree of difficulty that anyone over 18 could really struggle, especially some links courses. However, in the days of equality, my club championships is only for men from division A, (I have no issue with that), but, ladies can now enter with a 20 handicap!! I'm far from anti-ladies but, when the shouts of equality come drilling out at every opportunity, where's the equality in that?

Good for Sunningdale they are financialy stable enough to be choosey ..

i play off 8 now (just up from 6.6) there are days i fail to "demonstrate a satisfactory level of competence" :D :D

& this bit ..

what about people who genuinely play for fun then ? ok maybe they shouldnt be at sunningdale , but as a rule of thumb ? ? come on man ..

If its another attempt to wind up the high handicappers , then why ? ?
if its not then its a sad reflection on your good self..

GOLF is for every one of all levels to enjoy ,you just gota accept it , you have the choice to play elite comps or play scratch cups or equivalent if you dont want 45 points or the equivalent winning ..

I take it you dont bother with forum meets then ?? you should pm Bomber for a game , ye would enjoy the chat

My father-in-Law used to play off 10 many years ago. He is now 72, still fit but struggles to hit it very far so is now off 21. Who wants to tell him to stop playing??

It is the courses choice to limit there customers, the grove do similar for the back to black comp advertised in this months mag and I think hoylake have a simat policy too.
Makes sense if you can afford to turn custom away given the high difficult of courses.

Not me - I just think he should get a shot a hole.

I am not saying anyone can't play and by the way, Sunningdale is not a difficult course to play at either. I am just saying that I agree with them in that a shot per hole is enough for a man playing a golf course. Everyone can play, but that is the limit. Deducting a shot from your score after every hole seems enough of a help really.

I am not trying to wind anyone up. Just saying I agree with their policy.

So are you saying that they don't allow anyone on their course over 18 handicap or comps are restricted to 18 but you might be an 24 or all comps are restricted to actual 18 handicappers and less?

Don't be so dismissive.

We have a very significant number of our seniors who will never be anything other than 28 handicappers either due to advanced age or taking up golf in later life - or a combination of the two. They do, however, turn up a couple of times a week, pay their competition fees (including the optional 2s pool) and don't have the faintest chance of being in the prize money. They never complain, enjoy their day out and keep coming back for more. A maximum 28 handicap allows them to believe that something good might just happen but tell them 18 is the maximum and I doubt if they would bother.

I wonder if they chuck Brucie Forsyth off the course? Perhaps the "Price is Right" after a "Brucie bonus" in the back pocket and he's allowed to continue hacking around... :p

ive posted this nearly word for word a month or two ago. the only thing i added is that handicaps should start at 18 then go up if necessary. this would keep silly big numbers like 45+ but also means those that need the shots will eventually get them.

the bit about focusing the mind I agree with completely.

Em no it wouldn't. I recently played against an 18 handicap who I reckon would have been no worse than 9 over gross but more likely 7 over. So does that mean that handicaps should stop at 14 or 10? Why not just do away with them all together so that it means that those who are naturally talented can hoover up all the prizes? Handicaps are there for everyone to enjoy the game at a relatively similar standard (as long as they are a genuine handicap  but that is a different thread I think ;) )

it will make those "silly numbers" a hell of a lot rarer.

also with my method, handicaps can still go up to 28 if necessary! whats the problem?
