Right-o. Got a little theory if you suffer from similar issues as I have. Ive been playing quite a while now so think Ive got a reasonable grasp of the technical side.
I have been having some troubles down t' range recently shanking (not on course). And then hitting a few fats shots on the course (winter golf).
I hit the ball with a fade. Probably a little pushy fade which I think tends to shallow out my swing at the arc. I like to take a divot and I think the mats at the range have been really throwing me hitting it slightly fat and the club jumps sideways towards the toe and the hosel then gets into play. I've tried to persist with this as I can take out the left side of the course.
However now Im at the point I cannot practice up the range hitting 2 of every 10 or worse like this. It then causes you to do all sorts of nasty things to stop it from happening.
So I needed some help and purchased Tom Watsons lessons... DVD. It just so happened that I had my worst range session ever after I had ordered the DVD and it was sitting at home. I had already decided I was going to make some changes to the way I strike the ball. Well his secret he reveals is pretty much what I have been doing and the way he described what he changed specifically the follow through with the spine angle remaining straight was a great help.
I have been hitting some balls since and have a much better arc now rather than following through too high and steep I now come round a lot more with better turn around the follow through. The Arc is better and I seem to hit the ball first and divot afterwards more naturally. Especially with the longer irons. I can now also hit them at the range!
Just now have to try and work in a little fade or draw so I don't end up hitting it both ways!

Trouble with range mats is the club skids and so can mask the fat shot as you can land an inch or so behind the ball, it reacts with the mat and you still get a good(ish) strike. On the course you're dead and the divot goes further than the ball. Tricky though as they're a necessary evil over the winter with courses shut
