Got my 1st round of the clubs singles knockout (got a bye in the doubles :) ) this week. Not played this format before and I have drawn a 28 handicapper so I give him shots....

Any pointers much appreciated guys!!!

Cheers.

I'd be interested to hear them too mate, got 1st round of the King Rabbit matchplay comp tomorrow and never played the format before. Wise advice from my dad was to 'attack, attack, attack!'

He is off 28 so he is going to make a mess of several hole, just play your own game, no need to change, there is a reason that he is off 28.

Take each hole as they come, dont think too far ahead and dont worry if you screw up a hole. forget about it and go to the next one.

Just play your game and if you're good enough, you will win.

I tend to really concentrate on the holes where im giving shots and If i dont lose, or even win any of those I'm quite happy.

Relax and have fun. Good luck

In matchplay you play against your opponent, not the course. Don't worry about making a bogey or a double bogey or even a treble bogey. All that matters is that you take one shot less than your opponent. A lot of people will take on a crazy shot to try to save par when a bogey will win the hole.

And don't forget it is 18 separate holes. If you lose one it doesn't matter, there are 17 others to try to win instead.

Have fun

Just make sure you keep the ball in play, criminal just giving away holes losing a balls, make sure your opponent has to earn any holes he may win.

if I was playing a higher handicapper and a shot was risky, I would lay up and try an get up and down or at worst bogey an the majority of the time you won't lose the hole.

Regardless of where you give shots, take account of what your oppo does and play accordingly. If they mess up a shot, play yours steady and, first off, make sure its still in play. Some times you may have to "go for the shot" - but not always.

Don't worry too much about the shots given. All high handicappers (eg like me) get the shots cos they need them

Thanks all...... I am also high handicapper so will just try and play steady..... I can part all the holes on our course but am just as cable of taking doubles or trebles.....

Sounds like safety first unless he plays a blinder!!!!

Will let you know how I get on on.....

Never assume a hole is won or lost until the ball is in the hole.

Don't go for a crazy shot out of the trees just because he is in the middle of the fairway, especially off 28 as he's not guaranteed to hit the green.

Don't give cheap holes away by bad decisions, make him work for everything.

All pretty much along the same lines I know, but matchplay IMO is very mental and about course management.

My favourite format. I've made it to four finals, and won three of them.

first off, play your own game, he's going to hole a putt right when you think you've won a hole or fluke a chip in. Be ready forint and don't get distracted. If you go a few up, or a few down, stick with your game plan.

i like to make sure I'm fairly even at the turn, even one or two down. That way the pressure to maintain his position will get to him, Win a couple on the trot around 12/13 and watch him self destruct.

if you win a hole, whatever you do, don't gift him the next one back.

the hardest opponents, tend to be the ones who keep it on the short stuff, keep hitting fairways, I once won't 36 hole final plus playoff hole without once using my driver, one iron all the way. The last thing you want to do is throw holes at him, be hard to beat rather than going for crazy shots

I played yesterday (Tuesday) against a singlen figure player, I had lots of shots and in all but one instance I used them. Don't try and do anything heroic, and concentrate, +1 or +2 you must keep your concentration otherwise your oppenant will take advantage

BTW I won 3&2

Well I managed to win 2&1.... Tried my best to throw it away, was 4 up after 10 then had 20 minutes when I seemed to forget how to swing.... The holes I lost were my fault with the exceptions of the ones I gave shots away, which I never actually played them badly more him well......

Took you advice tho especially on the 17th, 1 up, he had a bit of a mare but had a shot..... 170 yards out on our parr 5, picked up a 7i thought 'right middle of green'.... Then took a step back and thought, why.. Trouble all round, dikes and OOB so picked up 8i left it short and chipped on (not the best chip) and 2 putted for net parr..... Thanks for the tips !!

Now for the next round where I get 6 shots :D  :eek:ne:
