Matchplay - stipulated round

Played (& lost) in foursomes last night - comp rules stated that we should play off the plates. I don't have a problem with that, but it got me thinking...why?

Surely in matchplay it doesn't matter where we play off? Let's face it, if neither team can play before the round deadline, it can be decided on the toss of a coin.

Any thoughts (or reasons why I'm wrong!)?
