Played a matchplay tonight and had to go to an extra hole. My opponent had a shot on the 1st. If we played the 1st as an extra hole would he get the shot again? ( we actually played the 18th to avoid confusion)

Matches continue from the same hole the original match started on in the same order with the same stroke allocation unless otherwise specified as a general rule.

Yes, which is why Congu guidelines advise not giving the 1st,2nd,17th or 18th as any of SI 1,2,17 or 18.

One thinking is that if a 7 h/capper plays an 8 h/capper and he got a shot on the 1st hole, thats ok over 18 holes, but unfair if he gets one on the first play-off hole.

Huyton and Prescot has its 1st as SI 1, but if a play off hole it reverts to SI 8 (I think).

Just using the OP scenario as an example, what would happen if they were supposed to play the 1st as the first extra hole but as above they replayed the 18th instead?

Pretty sure the result as played stands - unless one player makes a claim before the result is posted (eg, one player disagreed that 18 was the right hole but played it reluctantly). In that circumstance, i think match has to continue from correct place

I agree. It should have gone to the first but if both players agree to replay the 18th and there isn't an objection the result stands. As neither seemed aware of the need to move to the first it doesn't seem there would be any issue with the outcome

Although you were wrong in playing the 18th assuming the club declares the stipulated round as commencing from the 1st hole, Decision 2-5/8.5 could (possibly) apply in equity.
Where I play one pair were made to play their match again when it was found out they had started the round on an alternate tee.
