For anyone that is interested I had a decent end of season last year, picked up a couple of pots, had a handicap cut and made it to the final of the 0-12 handicap matchplay (where I lost).

This year my run in that particular comp is over already :o defeat at the 2nd extra hole in the preliminary round !!

However this post isn't really about that. I played against a fella I'd not really met before, just really seen around the club.

What a nice fella, what a cracking game we had. The lead changed hands 4 times, there was never more than 1 hole in it. If I hadn't tweaked my drive into the ditch on the 20th, we may still be there.

For me it demonstrates the beauty of the handicap system, I gave him 4 shots and we walked off the 18th all square.

Also the real beauty of club membership. Spot of matchplay on a wed evening, bit of a chat and a pint afterwards.

Don't worry too much, I've still got the winter league, summer foresomes and the 0-24 singles left. There's still some matchplay mileage left. I just hope all the remaining games are as enjoyable as last night:thup:

Sounds like a cracking match and my idea of competitive but social golf

Unlucky in regards the result and good luck for the other comps

Unlucky with your result. I've entered our for the first time in ages as I don't like the format or the competitive nature of the players who have beaten me in the past. I will talk to my opponent before the off. If they want a non social game, IT'S ON !

I guess I've been lucky. The fella that beat me in the final last year had a plan, was competitive but good company none the less.

An another chap I play with occasionally had a mix up on days/timings he was due to play, a break down in communication really. The fella he was playing was annoyed, when they finally played it, the match was played in silence. The only time they spoke was on the first tee and the last green:o

that's not my idea of fun
