Probably a short thread (hopefully)

If there are 42 players entered into 1st round for a matchplay comp (so 21 matches) would I be correct in thinking that 10 players (5 matches) need to get a bye to round 2 in order for there to be 16 matches (32 players) in the 2nd round?

Thanks in advance

(might seem a simple question but there were lots of cooks spoiling the broth)

Sounds about right...but it is very early in the morning to be doing maths and trying to figure it out!

10 matches in the first round are needed to get the number down to 32. So that is 22 getting a bye.

Is the correct answer

Are indeed the correct answers...

The way to look at is how many players do you need to eliminate in order to get to a suitable number (64/32/16 whatever). You need the same number of matches in round one as the number of players you need to eliminate. The rest get the bye.

Thanks guys

There's a logic there that most of us didn't see at the bar (we all had answers and we all knew our answers were wrong :o)
