I've just played a pairs match that we won but were never in the lead at any point of the match.

Was 2 down after 4 but won 5&7 to go a/s only to lose the 8th. We then went and halved til 15 where I won the hole then halved right through to 18.

We won on the 19th hole but I really did feel sorry for our opponents as we never really threatened them.

We're through now but just wondered if it has to anybody else or have you been on the end of a defeat you didn't really deserve to lose?

When I got to the Dubai finals of matchplay championships a few years ago, in the first round we lost the first hole and was 4 down with 6 to play...... Birdied 4 of last 6 (lipped in at 18 to half match) and then birdied 1st play off hole!

opponents were a little shell shocked to say the least!

One of the matchplays at the old club was a bit of a different format. What ever the difference was in strokes you started half that either up or down but then played off level, e.g. if it was a 10 shot difference you started 5 up/down. I started a match 8 down and was still 8 down at the turn... won on the last.

Hawkeye and I are the epitomy of a pair who should be better in 4BBB matchplay but always find a way to lose. We lost in the winter knockout to two old boys on the 21st having had so many occasions to close it out. Played the Nike a few years back and got beat on the 19th by a putt the length of the green that would have been almost on the 2nd had it not hit the flag flush and dropped straight in. Only time they'd been ahead. The complete antithesis of the winners on here

A few weeks ago playing for the club at home in a league match against a six capper I was 5 down with 7 to play. Parred my way in and won on the last. The other guy just fell apart after holing everything on the front nine to get his big lead.

I posted a couple of weeks ago about a 4bbb summer knockout that I played in. Hopelessly out of form, we were 5 down with 6 to play when I suddenly found a swing and went par, birdie, par, bogie, par par to go to the first extra hole and eagled it to go through!

...you should not of? tut :)

But I won our Winter singles K/O and I really shouldn't have won any of the quarter, semi or final matches as I shanked my way through all three. Just won the three matches through luck and opposition doing silly things - and my putting was red hot (when I had a chance to put it into action). Opponents couldn't believe they could lose the way I was playing.

What sort of 'pairs;)' match did you play.

Foursomes, mixed foursomes, greensomes, mixed greensomes, 4BBB or mixed 4BBB...........just curious

Off topic slightly, but what about the games you lost but on any other day would have won. I finished 3 under gross in a scratch game once and lost on the last. We halved that in pars. Would probably have beaten any other player from the other team that day.

when I go home my old 4 ball get together to play a quite competitive game. in one of these I never lead the scoring all day until I sunk a putt on the last and won on count back.

daylight robbery!

Today, scraped through my Nike round 2 match by going back down the 1st (19th) but with losing 3 of the last 4 holes I was as good as handing my head on a platter, but I squirmed my way out of it.

In reality, neither of us deserved to win and there wasn't much to talk about afterwards but I just edged it :smirk:

Won through the 2nd round of our knock-out for high handicappers after being 2 down with 3 to play against a much younger guy hitting the ball much further than me. He cocked up his shots into the green on each of the last 3 holes and I was able to take advantage. But felt I won by his mistakes rather than through my brilliant(!) play.

They deserved to lose or you deserved to win - either you played well towards the close (and beat them because of that) or they tightened up and blew it (and they lost because of that)

I was once 3 down with 3 to play. My opponent had a 2 foot putt to halve the 16th hole and to win the match. He expected me to concede it, but it was downhill and curly so I asked him to play it. He missed and was so angry with either me or himself that he was incapable of playing good golf after that. I won the match at the 1st extra hole! :)

Never concede a putt for the match, wise words in this case.

i beat a guy in the scratch knock out last year who was off 0 and i was off 6, four and 3;)

Played the same guy this year in the same comp.... dog licence this time though:(

Honestly, I think we were very lucky to win but hey ho into the semi's we go!!

We were 1down from 8-15 and every time we looked like winning a hole they'd either sink a putt or stiff it close for tap in.

I got a stroke of luck on 15th when my poor 2nd shot Was heading towards the trees only for it to hit the tree and bounce right onto the fairway. We won that and when on 17th we looked likely to win the hole only for one of them to sink a 35footer for a half!!
