Match play ruling

Playing in quarter finals of club pairs, 4ball better ball match play. Opponents state on the second hole that they have also entered the weekly club medal comp and plan to compete in this while playing our better ball match.

Is this action allowed?

As the game played out there was a lot of provisional balls played of the tee from one member of our opponents, a fair bit of looking for golf balls in the rough and trees in order to keep his medal round going. Not something that normally would happen in better ball comps!

Many thanks for any advice offered.

33-1/6 Players in Match Compete Concurrently in Stroke Play Competition

Q In ignorance of the Rules, A and B played a match and concurrently competed in a stroke play competition. What should the Committee do?

A Under Rule 33-1, the result of the match is null and void, and A and B are disqualified in the stroke-play competition. If the match was to be played on any day in a prescribed period, A and B must replay the match within the prescribed period. If it was too late for A and B to replay the match within the period, A and B are disqualified from the match play competition, unless one concedes the match to the other.

In ignorance of the rules, it could be argued that the right thing to do would be for the losers of the void match to concede the match...

Yep. We lost 2&1.

I personally would be a bit put out with the match being disrupted by the other team holing out everything & playing provisionals etc. However, to ask for a rematch now would look like sour grapes.

bit late now, it will just look like sour grapes. at least you know for next time you can't play the two formats together.

if you did mention it and want to take it further i imagine they would just be DQ from the medal

I would hope 'they' would follow all the rule and not just half of it.

The Decision quoted by Bobmac precludes the above!

It's not a case of sour grapes - though that may/may not be a reason for challenging the situation. It's simply a case of either playing according to The Rules of Golf or not! And, unfortunately, ignorance is no excuse! No different from accidentally getting a 4 and a 5 the wrong way round on a couple of par 4s - the higher score stands, but a lower score, unfortunately, means DQ!

Rule 33-1 specifically excludes combining Stroke and Match play in the same round:

Certain specific Rules governing stroke play are so substantially different from those governing match play that combining the two forms of play is not practicable and is not permitted. The result of a match played in these circumstances is null and void and, in the stroke play competition, the competitors are disqualified.
