Played a match play tie today and the following happened.

I hit my tee shot a bit right into trees, can't see it land but thought it might be OK, about 150 yards from the green.

Other guy then hits one further right and shorter. We find his ball but it's sitting on a fallen branch and 30 yards of trees to play through.

He then says we'll find mine as if we find it it will influence what he does. If we find it he was going to take a drop and try and play through the trees, if we didn't then he'd go back to the tee.

Didn't find mine so my provisional came into play. He then went back to the tee to play 3.

Was he within his right to try and find mine first (even though I was 50 yards closer to the hole) or could I have made him play/go back to the tee before looking as he was furthest away?

As it was I was happy to try and find mine as I'd prefer him trying to play out of the trees but unsure on the ruling if I'd not wanted to look for mine first?

If I was him I would have wanted to know your situation before I decided what to do. Quite sensiblelay on his part. Besides until you find yours the pair of you can't be 100% certain who is first to play.
