Marks and Spencers or Galvin Green?

Not wanting to hijack Wull's post...
So, you've started playing golf and joined a club.
You've got all the gear now it's time for the clothes.

Do you pay £10 for a normal polo shirt or £50 for the designer one
£75 for a Druh belt or £5 off the market?
£100 for a pair of troozers or £10 from Asda?

I understand (sort of) some people want to wear the designer clothing so they look "the part" whether its Hugo Boss, J Lindeberg etc they want to be seen wearing the "Right label"
But this takes the biscuit.....
Galvin Green........thermals
I mean, who's going to know???
£45  :D

Re: Marks and Spencers or Galvin Green?

I would never waste my money on top name clobber. I love Ping shirts, they are my "weakness" but will draw the line at spending over £20.00 for one, and will usually search ebay for bargains.
And £75.00 for a pair of trousers??? You must be joking. My most often worn trousers cost me £8.00 (Dunlop chinos) and £10.00 (Matalan Jeff Banks collection)
If I need new trousers or jumpers I will head for Matalan. If I needed a really nice pair of trousers I would most probably head for Marks & Spencer (one of the bigger branches that have hundreds of different pairs on display). Their jumpers are pretty good quality too.

Re: Marks and Spencers or Galvin Green?

Does anyone really think that wearing a GG polo will make you play better than a £15 one from Matalan/TKMaxx..?
To me, a lot of the so called "designer" - surely they're all designed anyway...- don't look as good as other non-big brands.
Hey, if you want to spend the money don't let me stop you.

Re: Marks and Spencers or Galvin Green?

Somewhere in between for me. I like the stuff in debenhams which at 30 squids for a pair o breeks I think is not too bad although if I come across a deal on stuff in the golf shop I might buy golf "branded" clobber.

Re: Marks and Spencers or Galvin Green?

I dont care what I am wearing as long as it fits - although that said the two pairs of trousers I wear for golf are a German designer brand (Alberto - if anyone knows a uk stockist then please let me know). These are around the 100 euro mark and I paid about £35 on ebay but the fit is perfect for me.

If I can find cheaper brands which fit well Im happy with that.

Re: Marks and Spencers or Galvin Green?

Bit of a mixture for me I've got few pairs of standard chinos which were about £15, but I'm another one who loves ping polos i apparently have to many and dont need anymore! mainly on import as it's cheaper although mr customs doesn't seem to agree!
Think there is a Market for all levels you spend what you want?

Re: Marks and Spencers or Galvin Green?

eBay is my friend. I have just picked up some lyle and Scott troos for £25. Would I have payed £75 for them? Not bloody likely. I do like to have a couple of real quality pieces for "special" days, but mostly it's eBay or TK Maxx. Anyway, even if I spent £100 on a t shirt, it would still look like a badly fitted rag on me. So why worry.

Look out if you're buying new as I bought a Lyle and Scott tshirt from ebay without noticing it was being sent from Thailand.

Sure enough it turned up and the tell tale signs of counterfeit were present - bad stitching around the button holes, different washing instructions.

I got a full refund but not for the postage costs of the sending or returning so ended up about £10 out of pocket - may be I should have jsut kept the fake:confused:

As with these cheap club sites I think its definitely a case of if it looks too good to be true then it probably is.

Re: Marks and Spencers or Galvin Green?

£75 for a Druh belt

A bit off topic I know, but does anyone else think that the Druh Belt db logo looks a bit like a gentleman's twig and berries?

Anyways, I tend to look for nice clothes when they're on sale, like the IJP trousers I got for £29.99 reduced from £79.99. They're actually nice enough that I can wear them to work.

Re: Marks and Spencers or Galvin Green?

I have 3 GG t-shirts, but only cos they were 3 for 2 in Nevada Bobs and they looked and felt nice, had them a year and they have worn extremely well and dont see why i wont have them for another couple of years, rest of my golf clothing i bought off the sale rack either in my pro shop or Nevada Bobs.
Got a mizuno skin for £15, and 3 Mizuno Windproof sweaters for £70, being XXL these sizes quite often are left behind and end up on sale rails. The 3 GG t-shirts though were bought the day they came in because i liked the colours LOL but was when a Clothing Sale was on.
I just wear ordinary trousers though which cost about £20 a pair or less, dont see the point in paying more when for about 9 months of the year the bottom gets covered in mud and after a couple of holes it wont matter what name is on the label.

Re: Marks and Spencers or Galvin Green?

I only buy in sales/online bargains
my clothes range from Sub70, Qa'aja, Adidas, Ping, Nike, Footjoy, Proquip & Pringle
Nothing cost more than £20 per item (except my proquip waterproof suit which was only £60)

Re: Marks and Spencers or Galvin Green?

i suppose it may depend on how much money you have, and how much you can afford to spare.

i personally wore t-shirts this season from primark aswell as some more expensive ones.

i also keep an eye out on ebay because you can always pick up named brands and much cheapness....well usually you can.i managed to get my ashworth waterproof top and trousers for less than £10.

Re: Marks and Spencers or Galvin Green?

As with these cheap club sites I think its definitely a case of if it looks too good to be true then it probably is.

A friend at my club bought the Ping S56's at the start of the year and got them for a great price off the pro, a few weeks later a bloke he worked with came into their work and was winding my friend up about how much he paid as the other bloke had paid almost half what my friend paid from one of those internet sites.
So they went out to the car park at lunch and my friend checked the other guys out and they were fakes, i dont recall exactly but the code number on the hosel was not etched on the way Ping do it or was missing completely.
Needless to say the other bloke was not laughing after that revelation.

Re: Marks and Spencers or Galvin Green?

It's a good call that you have to be vigilant on eBay. Never buy from countries with a roaring rip off industry. I have a list of sellers that I trust. Most of them are affiliated to a pro shop somewhere. It helps that my sizes are not the most popular. How many people buy 34w 36l troos?

Re: Marks and Spencers or Galvin Green?

I stick well clear of Matalan and other jumble sale shops as I don't like to look like a 16 year old going for his first job interview in "back to school" range trousers. I also don't want to wear a poor quality t-shirt which only fits where it touches.

Live and let live though.

Re: Marks and Spencers or Galvin Green?

Some things I don't mind paying a bit extra for, and in the main they last longer anyway. But I won't pay silly money for a belt or a wrist band...
