I know it's OK to mark and lift a ball when requested by a fellow competitor if it's in their way.

Can you lift ball if it's impeding your partner ?
(Better ball format)

It's fine to do so

22-2. Ball Interfering with Play

Except when a ball is in motion, if a player considers that another ball might interfere with his play, he may have it lifted.

I always make a point of holding ball lightly between finger and thumb.
I know someone who put ball in pocket, and matchplay opponent said she was cleaning it!

I put it down on the fairway to one side.

No. It is simply a lifted ball, out of play which has been set aside on the ground. If you were daft enough to forget what you were doing and play it from there, you would be playing a wrong ball.
