This is about golf really.

I have to change my car soon. As I've just moved jobs my daily commute has gone up from a total of 10 miles a day to 90. My current car (which I love dearly) gives truly awful mpg so I need something smaller and more diesel'ish. I've been considering a 2015 Golf or 2015 A3 Sportback.

And now the golf bit. Generally my clubs live in the boot of the car in case I get overcome with the urge to hit some balls. With the clubs (and frequently trolley) in there a lot of the time, folding the seats is not an option. So, I need a car where the clubs and my Motocaddy M1 can fit in the boot with the seats up.

Does anyone have a Golf or A3 sportback, and do clubs and trolley fit?

Cheers

Bri

First of all, the mpg on the Golf will be superb, once got 71mpg on a 2hr motorway journey albeit having to drive 70ish then 50 through M6 roadworks. If I got less than 54/55mpg on my normal 85 minute rush hour commute I was dissapointed. I had the 2.0 GT trim and miss it.

Re the clubs, I left mine in the car all the time but always had the split seat down in the back so clubs one way and trolley at the side of it. With the privacy glass in the back (I had a 3door) it wasn't easy to see they were in there but I often covered the bag logo with a dark cloth or towel, just in case. If you took the long clubs out the bag you'd be able to get em in sideways with trolley leaning against it.

You most likely will only get trolley and clubs in with the backseat down, that's what I normally do anyway as I can't be chewed trying to squeeze them in.

Thanks for the replies.

It doesn't have to be a Golf, but it won't be an Octavia. Don't like the look.

tbh (and I know I don't come out of this next sentence well), I'm also a bit of a badge snob. My last few cars have been Audis and BMWs. BMW 1 Series is definitely too small in the boot. Thought A3 sportback might be better. Removing the driver from the bag isn't a problem as long as it, bag and trolley all fit with the seats up.

I should probably just visit a dealership but I hate talking to car salesmen. The real problem is my perfect car doesn't exist - fast, comfortable, spacious, small, ecomonic, cheap, premium and fast.

They just go on the angle in an A4 avant - so they aren't going to go in the smaller sport backs easily.
Paradoxically the booted saloons generally work better for clubs.

I have a mark 7 golf, I have to take driver and 3 wood out and lay them across top of bag. Clicgear trolley goes in no problem.
I guess it depends how you view having to take two clubs out and then put them back in your bag. Less chance of putting your back out lifting bag in my opinion!

We have not long replaced one of our cars with a 2016 VW Golf R which I **think** is the same size and dimensions as the standard diesel affairs in the VW golf range but I am not 100% sure. I can get my bag/clubs in the back but have to take out the driver and fairway metal. I can sort of put these in at an angle but then I could not get my trolley in as it does not fold flat but more into a cube shape. Used to have a A3 a couple of years ago and had the same issues. Maybe think about an A3 estate or what ever audi try to call an estate these days?

Also I see someone mentioned a Skoda which was shot down just my tuppence we also had an Octavia and I would have that every day of the week over the A3 we had regardless of the badge on the front.

Edit:

Interestingly parkers gave me some information that i was shocked at I thought the Merc A class had a very small boot.

[h=3]How does the boot space compare?[/h][FONT=&quot]Check the table below to see how the Audi A3 Sportback compares to other similar cars in terms of available boot space.

Is it that you don't like the look, or don't like the badge? Be honest.

Remember that an Octavia is built on a golf floorpan, but like all Skodas it has a much bigger boot than the equivalent VW/Audi/Seat.

(FWIW, I can fit two cart bags and two trolleys into the boot of my Fabia estate without removing the drivers - and the Fabia is built on the even smaller Polo floorpan).

I have a VW Passat and I can get in 4 stand bags and a load of other crap. It's like a tardis!

The problem with the A3 is that the space behind the wheel arches (i.e. towards back of the car) if filled in. In most cars, and in particular the BMW 1 series, there is a gap there which is where the boot is at its widest.

I did have a 1 series convertible and it was easier to get my clubs in that than it was in my A3 for that exact reason.

If you have ruled out a 1 series because the boot is too small, I'm sure than an A3 will not only be smaller, it will also be a more awkward shape.

I've seen clubs, trolley and a travel bag go into the boot of a BMW 3 Series. The driver had to come out of the bag, but other then that absolutely no issues.

In the case of Octavia the honest answer is "both". I can't think of any Skodas that I like the look of. I know they're good, well made, well priced cars, and that in virtually every measurable way they compare very favourably to most VWs and Audis; but they just don't do it for me. On the other hand I think the outside of Seats look good. The problem with them is that I think the insides are a bit hard and plastic'y (I know it's plastic inside almost every car, but the ones in my current Audi feel really nice).

And, as I said before (and still doesn't make me look good), I know I'm a bit of a badge snob. On the other hand there's plenty of "premium" models that I think are pig-ugly too.

If you have ruled out a 1 series because the boot is too small, I'm sure than an A3 will not only be smaller, it will also be a more awkward shape.

When I bought my current car I also tried a BMW M135i. Loved the way it drove but was gutted when it came to trying my clubs in the back. Got them in by relocating all my woods, but there was barely enough room for my shoes, never mind a trolley.

I think life will be easier if I just accept that I need a car from the ranges that are one size up.

I've got a 330d now and it's a brilliant car.

I can get loads of stuff in there no problem. Had to go for a 3 series due to a sprog arriving, otherwise M240i all the way!

There are great deals to be had on 3 series (23% off list price without serious haggling). I'm going a bit off topic here really, but get on to coast2coast cars for an idea of the discounts that are available for all brands.

A skoda will always be better value than a Beamer, of course. And to some that's the priority which is absolutely fair enough. It's also almost certainly more practical but I'd never swap.

I'll be shortly moving to my second Skoda Superb and whilst I agree in general the Skoda exterior design leaves something to be desired, the new Superb is in a different class. Get's excellent reviews and in terms of VFM, space and bang for your buck it can't be beat.
This is what I'll be getting.
