I am travelling to Marbella in September (25th-30th) with the good wife and hoping to get at least one round in whilst there. I haven't been before and I am after a bit of guidance on local golf courses. Now I am not going to bring the clubs as I am probably only going to play one round so I am allowing €100 in my mind for club and buggy hire. Is this too much? I have done a wee bit of noseying and all the green fees seem to be quite expensive! Can you recommend a course in the vicinity which wont cost an arm or a leg or is there any courses that are simply worth the fee which I shouldn't miss? I am a tight ol sod like most of the rest but don't mind paying it for a course I am soon not to forget!

I'm going in 2 weeks. We're playing:

Marbella Golf and Country Club
Torrequebrada
Alcaidesa - Links and Heathland
Calanova
La Cala - America and Asia
Dona Julia
Estepona
Alhaurin

All very good options, and none of them too expensive (Alcaidesa probably the most expensive, and furthest from Marbella). Check out golfinspain.com for prices, it's not too bad. Would definitely recommend Marbella Golf and Country Club.

Alhuirin is my favourite course in that area, followed by Santa Clara, which was in lovely condition when I played it in May.

Alhaurin . You are cruel to suggest there on his first visit to the area.

Santa Maria is a nice knock, even if it is a bit short but is reasonably cheap. Santana and El Chaparral are also worth a look at and a mate (who also loves Marbella G & CC) has just played Valle Romano and highly recommends it.

We usually use www.golf-service.com when we go over there.

Completely forgot about Santa Clara, we're playing there on the first day :D

Green Bay, what's cruel about suggesting Alhaurin? Looks awesome.

Great stuff guys, keep them rolling in! How about club hire quality? Are they generally in good condition?

If you're likely to get more than one chance to play, then I'd definitely give clubstohire.com a look. Looking at around 60 euros a week for a full set of Taylormade Aeroburner woods and RSI irons.

Not for the faint hearted to say the least. One of those love them or hate them courses. The front 9 is paticularly tough with quite a few blind shots. Add into the mix that it is right on top of a mountain and it seems to have a different climate to the rest of the Costa.
We also had a nightmare journey of about 2 hours to get there from Santana GC as we had to go via a diversion that took us literally through farm yards and dirt tracks on the side of the mountain.

Sounds similar to Las Ramblas. Looking forward to giving it a go anyway, looks awesome.

Haha, that doesn't sound promising. We always get lost on the way to golf courses, so not looking forward to the drive to Alhaurin now!

Monte Mayor was also another of those type of coures and I loved that course.

Post your thoughts up about Alhaurin when you have played it.

You will be fine getting up there as the main road is on the other side of the mountain. It was easier for us to go on the other road but we didn't realise that there were major road works in progress.

Wouldn't say it was similar to Las Ramblas, I quite enjoyed playing there. Alhaurin is a different ball game, everyone of us felt it was poor, loads of shots that you couldn't see land although they should have been easy to find, they weren't. There is some big drops, and I mean big so its a real hike, and be careful going down the slopes with the buggy, you will get the fright of your life.

Marebella G & C club is a nice track, Estapona do a weekly membership which I have used a couple of times and its cracking value for money, they have a vets comp on a Wednesday if I remember and most who play are ex-pats, real good banter in clubhouse. Enjoy it whichever course you choose.
